AJGA POSTSEASON JUNIOR AT HAGERSTOWN
Beaver Creek Country Club
Hagerstown, Maryland
September 21-23, 2001
BRICKER FIRES LOW ROUND OF THE DAY
IN HAGERSTOWN
Three juniors one shot off the pace
HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Chad Bricker of Waynesboro,
Pa., fired a 1-over-par 73 to take the lead in the first
round of the AJGA Postseason Junior at Hagerstown Saturday.
The 36-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association, is being held at Beaver Creek Country
Club. The inaugural tournament is one of two events
being held this weekend for members, boys ages 13-18,
who have been unsuccessful in gaining entry into AJGA
events in the past.
The AJGA developed this series as an avenue for more
members to earn playing opportunities at the national
level and gain exposure for college golf scholarships.
The other event, the AJGA Postseason Junior at Kissimmee/St.
Cloud, is being held simultaneously at Celebration Golf
Club in Celebration, Fla.
Bricker carded two birdies en route to a 36-37-73 and
a one-shot lead.
"I started out pretty well," the 14-year-old
said. "I birdied No. 7 and then hit my approach
shot to five feet on No. 8, but I lipped out and made
par. I putted well and made a lot of three to six footers.
I also drove the ball well and hit a lot of fairways.
I was very consistent today and I did not have any big
numbers."
Bricker was cruising at even-par through 10 holes when
he bogeyed Nos. 11 and 13. But four pars and a birdie
on the 414-yard par-4 17th hole saved his round and
gave him a thin margin heading into the final day.
"I need to keep working on my putting to shoot
a good score tomorrow," he continued. "I have
an advantage on this course because there are a lot
of tight holes and I hit the ball straight. Hopefully
tomorrow I will continue to drive the ball well."
On Bricker's heels one shot off the pace at 74 are
Charlie Pulliam of Bardstown, Ky., Aaron Jessee of Gray,
Tenn., and Ryan Dunham of West Covina, Calif. Shawn
Hall of Lancaster, Pa., is currently in fifth place
with a 75.
In all, 27 players sit within eight strokes of the
lead heading into the final 18 holes.
The winner of the event will be automatically accepted
into three AJGA events in 2002, the top five finishers
will receive two automatic entries, while those who
place in the top 15 will be automatically accepted into
one AJGA tournament.
Final-round tee times will run from 7:30-9:27 a.m.,
off the No. 1 and 10 tees Sunday.
