AJGA GREATER GREENSBORO CHRYSLER JUNIOR
Pepsi Qualifier Series presented by ClubCorp
The Cardinal Golf & Country Club
Greensboro, N.C.
June 10, 2001

NINE BOYS, TWO GIRLS FILL FINAL SPOTS FOR AJGA
GREATER GREENSBORO CHRYSLER JUNIOR

GREENSBORO, N.C.-- Maggie Simons shot a 78 to grab medalist honors in the Girls Division of the Pepsi Qualifier Series presented by ClubCorp for the AJGA Greater Greensboro Chrysler Junior. In the Boys Division, Phelps Brooks shot a 2-over-par 72 to take medalist honors on the par-70 layout at The Cardinal Golf & Country Club.

The Pepsi Qualifier Series presented by ClubCorp, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, featured 12 girls and 85 boys attempting to qualify for the final 11 spots for the AJGA Greater Greensboro Chrysler Junior

Simons, a 16-year-old from Raleigh, N.C., shot 41-37 for an 8-over-par 78. Simons recovered on the back nine after struggling on the way out.

"The front side was ugly," said Simons. "I played the back side pretty well. I made a lot of putts to save par, and I didn't miss a fairway on the back," said Simons. "I really need to work on my short irons to do well in the tournament."

Simons will play in her second AJGA tournament, after competing in the AJGA PING Myrtle Beach Junior Classic last year. Also qualifying in the Girls Division was Dinah Plyler of Chapin, S.C., with a 38-42--80.

The 15-year-old Brooks, from Cheraw, S.C., had 16 pars and two bogeys en route to a 36-36--72.

"I played pretty consistent throughout the whole day," Brooks said. "My short game and putting were very good today. Hopefully, I can continue to do that in the tournament."
Brooks will play in his first AJGA tournament this week. He knows what he needs to do to play well this week.

"I made a few mental errors today. I need to prepare myself mentally and get in the right frame of mind for the next few days," Brooks added.

Also qualifying in the Boys Division was Ryan Holler (35-38--73) of Morehead City, N.C., Justin Cowart (36-37--73) of Ellabell, Ga., Ty Lefler (38-36--74) of Apex, N.C., Ben Goforth (37-37--74) of Shelby, N.C., Matt Collings (40-34--74) of Newton, N.C., McClean Boyd (40-34--74) of Wilmington, N.C., Andrew Teden (38-37--75) of Charlotte, N.C., and Nick Chauvenet (39-36--75) of Winston-Salem, N.C. Chauvenet and Teden qualified in a sudden-death playoff.

The Greater Greensboro Chrysler Junior runs from June 12-14 at The Cardinal Golf and Country Club with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. The tournament will feature 102 players representing 19 states and Canada, including 36 contestants from North Carolina. In the field are AJGA Polo Golf Junior All-Americans Roberto Castro (Alpharetta, Ga.), Jackie Beers (Midlothian, Va.), and Whitney Wade (Glasgow, Ky.).
