CASTRO BEATS WEATHER DELAY TO OPEN
UP THREE-SHOT LEAD Beers fires 72 for lead after second-round
GREENSBORO, N.C.-- Roberto Castro fired a 1-under-par
69 and beat a one-hour, 16-minute weather delay to grab
a three-shot lead in the Boys Division after the second
round of the AJGA Greater Greensboro Chrysler Junior
at The Cardinal Golf & Country Club. Jackie Beers
leads the Girls Division at 8-over-par 148.
The 54-hole tournament, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association, features 102 players representing
18 states, Washington, D.C., and Canada, including 36
North Carolina natives.
Castro, a native of Alpharetta, Ga., was 1-over-par
on the front nine. After a birdie on No. 1, Castro ran
into trouble on No. 2, hitting his drive out-of-bounds,
but he managed to salvage a bogey. He then bogeyed No.
9, but birdied Nos. 10 and 11 to get to 1-under for
his round. He is 1-over-par (141) for the tournament
after shooting a 72 on Tuesday.
"I hit it pretty well today," Castro said.
"I only missed two greens. The pins were a little
more accessible.
"My short game saved me today. I only missed one
up-and-down."
The 15-year-old Castro, an Honorable Mention Polo Golf
Junior All-American last season, said the course provides
a stern test for the players.
"This is the hardest course I've ever played,"
Castro said of the par-70 layout. "The greens are
small, and the hazards are placed where you are going
to miss your shots."
Andrew Medley (72-72) of Athens, Ala., and Kyle Metzler
(70-74) of Rancho Murieta, Calif., are three shots back
at 144 (+4). Webb Simpson (75-70) of Raleigh, N.C.,
and Brett Stegmaier of Madison, Conn., are in fourth
at 145.
Beers, a native of Midlothian, Va., carded a 2-over-par
72 today en route to a four-shot lead after the second
round.
Beers was even-par through seven holes, but a double-bogey
on No. 8 put her at 2-over through the front nine. She
got back to even-par with a birdie on No. 13, but another
double-bogey on No. 14 dropped her to 2-over. She managed
to play even the rest of the round for a 72.
"I didn't hit too many greens," Beers said.
"I hit a couple of long birdie putts, but I need
to eliminate the double-bogeys."
Beers played three holes before the weather delay.
"It didn't really have an effect on me. It was
just like starting over," said Beers.
Andrea Vander Lende of Longwood, Fla., and Kelly Froelich
of Wesley Chapel, Fla., are tied for second at 152.
Final-round action begins Thursday morning at 7:30
a.m. For more information about the AJGA Greater Greensboro
