AJGA GOLFWEEK CHICAGO JUNIOR
Winnetka Golf Club
Winnetka, Illinois
June 12-15, 2001
YOUNGSTERS TAKE MEDALIST HONORS AT
WINNETKA GOLF CLUB
14-year-olds Lowry and Park finish first in Boys
and Girls Divisions, respectively
WINNETKA, Ill. - Randy Lowry of
Spring, Texas, earned his first AJGA championship after
carding his third consecutive round in the 60s Friday
at the AJGA Golfweek Chicago Junior held at Winnetka
Golf Club. Jane Park of La Crescenta, Calif., claimed
medalist honors in the Girls Division with a three-day
total of 6-over-par 219.
"It feels great," Lowry said
of his nine-stroke victory. "I'm just really proud
of myself for keeping it together."
Lowry and Park, both 14, paced the field on a day that
saw play slowed by a sudden deluge of rain. The weather
did not prevent the two winners from firing their best
rounds of the tournament as Lowry shot a 4-under-par
67 and Park carded an even-par 71. Friday's round dropped
Lowry to 9-under-par for the tournament and brought
his three-round total to 204.
The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association, featured 99 players including 50 Illinois
natives. Three foreign players participated in the AJGA
Golfweek Chicago Junior.
Finishing in second place was Ryan Cochran of Paducah,
Ky., who wrapped up action at even-par 213. The 17-year-old
Cochran began the day four strokes back of Lowry but
made birdies on the second, third and fourth holes to
gain momentum.
However, Lowry said Cochran's push did not affect him.
"I wasn't focused on the lead," the Texas
native said of his final round performance. "I
was just focused on shooting a good score. The key today
was my mental focus. I didn't focus on anything besides
my own game because I knew if I played my game there
wouldn't be any problems."
Scott Weber of Lake Forest, Ill., took home the Nabisco
Oreo Cookie Low Final Round Award after shooting a 6-under-par
65 Friday to finish in third with a three-round total
of 216. Four golfers tied for fourth place at 4-over-par.
Nicholas Schenk of Batavia, Ill., Mike Calkin of St.
Charles, Ill., Ryan Henry of Broken Arrow, Okla., and
Michael Moir of Aberdeen, Scotland each shot 217.
Park claimed her second-career AJGA victory Friday
in just her sixth tournament. Last year, she won the
Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Eagle Ridge.
"From the start, I felt I was going to win,"
the Southern California native confessed. I had a very
positive attitude."
Local product Alexis Wooster of Winnetka, Ill., finished
in second with a three-round score of 9-over-par 222.
2001 Mexican Women's Amateur champion Devan Andersen
of Guadalajara, Mexico, claimed third place with a three-day
total of 13-over-par 226.
