RANDY LOWRY FIRES A 3-UNDER-PAR 68 TO LEAD THE FIELD AT WINNETKA
Clare Lucey and Mandi McConnell share the lead in the Girls Division

WINNETKA, Ill. - Randy Lowry of Spring, Texas carded a 3-under-par 68 to claim the first round lead at the AJGA Golfweek Chicago Junior at Winnetka Golf Club. Mandi McConnell of Grand Blanc, Mich., and Winnetka native Clare Lucey both shot 1-over-par 72s to take the early lead in the Girls Division.

A field of 99 boys and girls, ages 13-18, are competing in the 54-hole event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association. The field features 50 Illinois natives, including five players from Winnetka.

The 14-year-old Lowry was solid throughout the day, hitting 15 greens on a round that consisted of three birdies and 15 pars.

"Overall, I'm very pleased," Lowry said. "I drove the ball really well and hit some good iron shots. The greens I missed I was able to get up-and-down and make a few putts and it turned out well."

Tied for second place behind Lowry is Michael Moir of Aberdeen, Scotland, and Mike Calkin of St. Charles, Ill., who both carded 1-under-par 70s. Zac Zedrick of Danville, Ill., shot an even-par 71 to sit in fourth place after round one.

In the Girls Division, local golfer Clare Lucey fired a 1-over-par 72 to share the lead with Mandi McConnell in the Girls Division. The 17-year-old Lucey carded an eagle and three birdies, in addition to hitting every fairway in her first AJGA event.

"I was really pumped up after my eagle on No. 2," Lucey said. "Then I chipped in for birdie on No. 5, and that really got me excited. I missed a lot easy putts, but overall I played pretty solid."

Alexis Wooster, who tied for second in this event last year, is third at 3-over-par 74.

Tournament action will continue tomorrow with tee times running from 7:00-11:48 a.m. at Winnetka Golf Club.
