COMPAQ JUNIOR ALL-STAR CLASSIC AT
FIELDSTONE
Fieldstone Golf Club
Greenville, Delaware
July 23 - 25, 2001
WILLINGHAM, GODWIN TAKE FIRST-ROUND
FIELDSTONE LEAD
GREENVILLE, Del. - Evan Willingham of Raleigh, N.C.,
and Meredith Godwin of Swarthmore, Pa., captured the
first-round lead in their respective divisions Tuesday
at the Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Fieldstone,
conducted by the American Junior Golf Association.
Willingham, playing in the first group of the day,
posted an even-par 71 at Fieldstone Golf Club, then
watched and waited as 70 other players in the Boys Division
were unable to match him.
"I like the course a lot," the 14-year-old
said. "The fairways are some of the best I've ever
played."
That was good for Willingham, who hit his tee shots
with tremendous accuracy.
"I only missed one fairway," he said. "I
kept the ball in play and if you do that, you can shoot
some pretty low scores."
Willingham hit a rough spell in the middle of his round,
but recovered to keep his good round intact.
"I doubled 8 and bogeyed 9," he explained.
"I wanted to birdie the next couple of holes because
they were birdie holes. I ended up making birdie at
10 and 11."
With three birdies on the back nine, Willingham fired
a 2-under-par 34 after carding a 2-over 37 on the front.
Trailing Willingham by one shot is Greg Carlin of Kensington,
Md., who shot 1-over-par 72. Four players are tied for
third place at 73, including Seth Moul of Hagerstown,
Md., Kyle Davis of Kennett Square, Pa., John-Tyler Griffin
of Wilson, N.C., and Jared Taylor of Bluefield, Va.
In the Girls Division, the 15-year-old Godwin carded
a 4-over-par 36-39-75 to grab a four-shot lead. Godwin
played a steady round, firing 14 pars and four bogeys.
"It's tough out there," she said. "You
have to place your shots perfectly or you're in a bunker
or in the rough, which is very long."
To stay out of trouble, Godwin took a conservative
approach, which served her well.
"I didn't use my driver a lot off the tee,"
said Godwin, who also had her short game in top form.
"My putting and chipping were on - I got up and
down almost every time."
Katie Trachok of Upper St. Clair, Pa., is four shots
back in second place after an 8-over-par 79. Brittany
Johnston of Akron, Ohio, and Jessica Reno of Wilmington,
Del., are tied for third place at 80.
Final-round tee times at the Compaq Junior All-Star
Classic at Fieldstone will begin Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.
off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees at Fieldstone Golf Club.
