DANA JOHNSON FIRES A 69 TO TAKE A 2-STROKE LEAD AT EAGLE RIDGE
Christi Athas's 5-over-par 77 leads Girls Division

GALENA, Ill. - Dana Johnson of Brantford, Ontario, leads the Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Eagle Ridge after firing a first-round score of 3-under-par 69. Christi Athas of Eldora, Iowa, tops the leaderboard in the Girls Division after shooting a 5-over-par 77.

The Compaq/David Leadbetter Junior All-Star Series was created by the American Junior Golf Association in 1998 to give younger AJGA members more opportunities to play competitive golf. This event, open to 13-to-15-year-old members, features a Day of Education conducted by the AJGA and David Leadbetter Golf Academy staff and two days of stroke play competition. The tournament field represents 23 states and Canada, with 30 players hailing from Illinois.

The 15-year-old Johnson carded six birdies on the back nine, including three consecutive birdies on holes 10, 11 and 12.

"I wasn't where I wanted to be after the front nine," Johnson said. "I really fought back and I don't think my putting could have been any better on the back nine."

Alone in second at two strokes off the pace is Tim Cha of Chino Hills, Calif., who shot 37-34--71. Michael Schachner of Libertyville, Ill., and Tyler Peglow of Marshalltown, Iowa, are tied for third place at even-par 72, and Ian Springer of River Forest, Ill., sits in fifth place at 1-over-par 73.

Christi Athas, playing in her second consecutive year at the AJGA Eagle Ridge event, hopes to improve on her finish from last year.

"I struggled with my chipping today and I couldn't quite get the ups-and-downs," Athas said. "The key to doing well this week will be to stay focused and not let anything frustrate me."

Four strokes back in second place is Jennifer Hong of Windermere, Fla., who carded a 9-over-par 81, tied for third are Amanda Bader of Lima, Ohio, and Katie Trachok of Upper Saint Clair, Pa., both shooting 82s.

Another highlight in the Girls Division was a hole-in-one by Lauren May of St. Charles, Ill. May used an 8-iron to hole her shot off the 126-yard, par-3 eighth hole.

Final-round action begins at 7:30 a.m. Thursday off Nos. 1 and 10 tees at Eagle Ridge Inn & Resort. For more information on the Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Eagle Ridge, contact tournament headquarters at (815) 776-5174.
