Thirteen boys, one girl secure spots in field for AJGA FutureLinks Junior at Deer Creek

AJAX, Ontario-Mike Boyce of Uxbridge, Ontario, fired a 6-under-par 66 to grab medalist honors in the Boys Division at the AJGA FutureLinks Junior at Deer Creek Qualifier held at Deer Creek Golf & Country Estates, Sapphire/Emerald courses. Erica Deschamps of Blind River, Ontario, secured the top spot in the Girls Division with an 80.

The 18-hole qualifier, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, featured 76 players representing five states, including 57 Ontario natives. Thirteen boys and one girl earned entry into the AJGA FutureLinks Junior at Deer Creek to be held August 28-31 at the Ruby/Diamond courses at Deer Creek Golf & Country Estates.

Boyce carded seven birdies on the day, using a hot putter to drain two long birdie putts on the front and strong iron play on the back to set up five more birdies. The 17-year-old connected on a 25-foot birdie on No. 1 and rolled in another birdie from 22 feet on No. 3 to highlight a 1-under-par 35 on the front. Boyce was equally aggressive on the back, with birdies on both par-5s en route to a bogey-free, 5-under-par 31.

"My approach shots were good today," said Boyce, who hit 15 of 18 greens in regulation on the day. "I was able to keep it in play today and I made some key putts when I did miss greens. Getting a few birdies early also helped me relax a little."

Victor Ciesielfki of Cambridge, Ontario, also broke 70 with a 3-under-par 69 to take runner-up honors. Ciesielfki connected on a pair of birdies and eagled the 463-yard, par-5 10th. John Kassabian of Scarbourogh, Ontario, and Anthony Manna of Richmond Hills, Ontario, each carded 2-under-par 70s to tie for third.

Also qualifying in the Boys Division were Brad Revell of Kingston, Ontario; Scott Schrader of Lindsay, Ontario; Mike Hamilton of Uxbridge, Ontario; Daniel Kim of Cerritos, Calif.; Billy Hanes of Elma, N.Y.; Daniel Kim of Torrance, Calif.; Dave Patronik of Orchard Park, N.Y.; Brian Riley of Rochester, N.Y.; and Brandon Edwards of Peterborough, Ontario.

In the Girls Division, Deschamps' round was highlighted by a near hole-in-one on the 128-yard, par-3 13th. The 16-year-old knocked a 7-iron within inches of the hole before tapping in for birdie. Deschamps finished the day at 38-42-80 to claim the only available girls' spot by two strokes.

"I like this kind of course," Deschamps said. "The only shots I gave away today were from missing fairways. The greens were also tough in the morning until they dried up which took time to adjust to."

First-round action begins Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. For more information regarding the AJGA FutureLinks Junior at Deer Creek, please contact tournament headquarters at (905) 427-0387 ext. AJGA.
