EAST EXTENDS LEAD AS DAY TWO CONCLUDES AT BILTMORE FOREST
East veteran Wongluekiet continues success at Canon Cup

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The East relied on strong morning performances in the Foursome matches to take a 16 ½ - 13 ½ lead heading into Thursday's Singles matches at the 12th annual Canon Cup.

The Canon Cup, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, features the nation's top 40 junior golfers, ages 13-18. The competition pits the East vs. West in a match-play format similar to the Ryder Cup. Teams (10 boys and 10 girls) were selected based on a point system and include four captains' picks per squad. In the field is 28 Polo Golf Junior All-Americans, including eight first-teamers. Past participants of the event include Tiger Woods, Stewart Cink, David Gossett, Charles Howell III, Grace Park and Wendy Ward. The Canon Cup will be decided with the first team reaches 25 ½. The East leads the all-time series 7-3-1.

East members Chan Song Wongluekiet of Bradenton, Fla., and Casey Wittenberg of Memphis, Tenn., led the morning Four-Ball matches, coming back from 2-down, after knocking in birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to win 1-up over Ryan Baca of Richmond, Texas, and Jay Reynolds of Austin, Texas.

Wongluekiet ran his 2001 Canon Cup record to 3-0 and his three-year mark to 9-1-1 when he teamed in Mixed Four-ball with Brittany Lincicome of Pinellas Park, Fla., to knock off Whitney Welch of Las Vegas, Nev., and Jonathan Moore of Portland, Ore., 2 and 1.

"I told Chan heading into the No. 17 (during his afternoon match) that he was my horse and I had no doubt he would come through with a victory," said East team captain Todd Garten. "He hasn't let me down yet and I don't expect him too."

East teammates Webb Simpson of Raleigh, N.C., and Brendon Todd of Cary, N.C., kicked off the morning in fine fashion winning the day's first match over Ryan Moore of Puyallup, Wash., and Drew Pigg of Plano, Texas, 3 and 2.

"It's a big confidence builder for not only Brendon and I, but the entire East team," said Simpson. "I halved both of my matches yesterday, so it's nice to finally get a point under my belt."

The match of the morning pitted West teamers and fellow Plano, Texas, natives Matthew Rosenfeld and Jeff Bell against James Vargas of Miami and Roberto Castro of Alpharetta, Ga. With the match standing at all square heading into the 17th hole, Rosenfeld stunned the crowd after chipping in from 30 feet for birdie. Fellow first-team Polo Golf Junior All-American Vargas matched Rosenfeld's birdie with one of his own, draining a 25-footer to remain all square.

"For some reason I knew Matt was going to chip it in," said Vargas. "I knew I had to make it and I wasn't going to leave it short."

Vargas hit his approach to about 20 feet on the par-4 18th hole, setting up Castro with a birdie opportunity. Rosenfeld's iron shot landed in the rough, 30 feet right of the hole. Bell was left with a difficult downhill chip shot that ended up 20 feet below the hole. With an East par already in the bag, Rosenfeld came up big, draining a clutch putt to halve the match.

"Bell put me in great position with a solid drive off the 18th tee and I let him down with a bad approach shot," said the 2000 Polo Golf Junior Player of the Year Rosenfeld. "My putter had been working all day and I knew I could make it."

Paula Creamer of Pleasanton, Calif., and Allison Martin of Bakersfield, Calif., garnered the first of two victories for the West in the morning with a 3 and 2 victory over Lisa Tyler of Lighthouse Point, Fla., and Aimee Cho of Orlando, Fla. Welch and Brittany Lang of McKinney, Texas, carded the other win with a 5 and 4 triumph over Whitney Code of Tampa, Fla., and Whitney Wade of Glasgow, Ky.

The West squad battled back in the afternoon, edging the East 3-2. R. Moore and Lani Elston of Spokane, Wash., led off the Mixed Four-Ball matches with a 5 and 3 victory over Vargas and Elizabeth Janangelo of West Hartford, Conn.
