HOMER, BRASCHLER GRAB MEDALIST HONORS AT BUICK JUNIOR
OPEN QUALIFIER
15 boys, 3 girls gain entry into tournament field
HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich.-Nils Homer of Brampton,
Ontario, fired a 1-under-par 71 Monday to grab medalist
honors in the Boys Division at the Buick Junior Open
Qualifier. Samantha Braschler of Red Wing, Minn., secured
Girls Division honors with an 81.
The 18-hole qualifier, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association, included 58 players representing 13
states and Canada. Fifteen spots were on the line in
the Boys Division and three spots in the Girls Division
for entry into the Buick Junior Open to be held August
21-23 at the Boyne Highland's Moor Course.
Starting his round on the 13th hole, Homer got it going
early with a five-foot birdie putt on the 160-yard,
par-3 17th. After a pair of birdies on Nos. 8 and 9,
the 17-year-old kept the momentum going on No. 10, sticking
an 8-iron from 153-yards out to within seven feet of
the hole and draining it for birdie. Homer then rolled
in a 30-footer for birdie on No. 11 to move him to 1-under-par.
"I played well," Homer said. "I drove
the ball well today and only missed a few fairways.
My biggest concern today was keeping it in the fairway
and doing that made my day much easier."
James Song of Oxnard, Calif., finished one stroke back
at 36-36--72. Eddie Hsu of Diamond Bar, Calif., carded
a 73 to take third; Matthew Myers of St. Joseph, Mo.,
finished fourth at 74; Michael Belich of West Allis,
Wis., and Corey Rudd of Baudette, Minn., round out the
top-5 with a pair of 75s.
Also qualifying in the Boys Division were Tyler Randol
of Lawrence, N.Y.; Clark Klaasen of Ada, Mich.; Cean
Geronimo of Redondo Beach, Calif.; Daniel Kim of Cerritos,
Calif.; Clark Stevenson of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Ralph
Martello of Whitle Lake, Mich.; Ben Burke of Lake Forest,
Ill.; Ryan Otto of St. Joseph, Mich.; and Garrett Green
of East Aurora, N.Y.
In the Girls Division, Braschler shot 9-over-par 81
to take medalist honors and earn entry into the tournament
field.
"I'm excited for the tournament," Hull said.
"The course played tough for me, so I just tried
to keep it in play all day. "
Also qualifying in the Girls Division were Moira O'Connel
of Bloomfield Hills (82), Mich., and Heather Scholten
of Grand Rapids, Mich (83).
First-round action for the Buick Junior Open begins
