NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

July 30 - August 2
JANANGELO GRABS GIRLS MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIP
IN PLAYOFF
Lang takes tournament to three extra holes
WILMINGTON, Del.-Elizabeth Janangelo of West
Hartford, Conn., fired a final-round 74 Thursday but
needed three extra playoff holes to take the championship
at The DuPont Country Club. Brittany Lang of McKinney,
Texas, fought to the end to finish second.
The 54-hole major event, conducted by the American
Junior Golf Association, featured 67 girls representing
22 states and Canada. The field included 21 Polo Golf
Junior All-Americans. Past champions in the tournament's
13-year history include Kellee Booth, Grace Park, Beth
Bauer and Leigh Ann Hardin.
The 17-year-old Janangelo held a 2-stroke lead entering
hole No. 14 but made a double-bogey to go to even-par
for the tournament and fall into a tie with Lang. The
two players kept pace with each other until No. 16 when
Lang bogeyed and Janangelo made another double-bogey.
"I made a mental mistake on 14 when I hit the
ball over the green," Janangelo said. "Any
other day the ball probably would have stayed in the
rough on the back of the green but today it went all
the way down into the hazard."
Down one stroke on the 18th tee, Janangelo stood up
and hit a drive that hooked around the corner of the
dogleg and through the fairway. After taking relief
from the leaderboard area, she pitched out to the fairway
and made a bogey. Lang hit her shot from the middle
of the fairway into the front, right greenside bunker.
Failing to get on the green from the bunker, Lang ended
up with a double-bogey on the hole to force a playoff.
"I hit my drive perfect on 18," Janangelo
said. "I really had to hit a snap hook off the
tee to stay in the fairway and just hit it too good."
Both players bogeyed No. 10, the first playoff hole,
after hitting their approach shots in the rough to the
back, left of the green but made routine pars on No.
18 to take it to a third hole. Lang hit her tee shot
on No. 10 down the middle and Janangelo hit it 15 yards
longer down the middle. After Lang hit her approach
shot into the left greenside bunker, Janangelo hit her
shot to the middle of the green, 20 feet below the hole.
Lang hit a bunker shot to the back of the green and
Janangelo lagged her ball to inside a foot. Janangelo
then made her par putt to win the championship after
Lang missed her run at par.
"I just kept telling myself that I could make
the putts," Janangelo said. "I'm so excited
to win this tournament because of the history."
This tournament caps a solid season for Lang, who won
the AJGA Lucent Technologies Girls Junior Championship
earlier this year.
"I wanted to finish the season on a good note,"
Lang said. "I'm happy with the way I played this
week in a major tournament."
Janangelo will represent the East team at Canon Cup
next week in Asheville, N.C., and attempt to win her
fifth consecutive state amateur championship in Connecticut
in two weeks.
Perry Swenson of Charlotte, N.C., carded a final-round
73 to finish one stroke behind in third place at 4-over-par.
Jane Lee of Torrance, Calif., Alice Kim of Los Angeles,
and Paula Creamer of Pleasanton, Calif., finished in
a tie for fourth place at 6-over-par.
