GRZEBIEN LOOKS TO FOLLOW IN SISTERS' FOOTSTEPS
AT AJGA MARSH JUNIOR

Peffley stays atop leaderboard in Boys Division

FARMINGDALE, N.Y.-Anna Grzebien fired a second-round score of even-par 70 to hold on to her lead in the Girls Division at the AJGA Marsh Junior at Bethpage State Park. Blaine Peffley of Lebanon, Pa., posted a second-round score of even-par 70 to retain the lead in the Boys Division.

The American Junior Golf Association's Marsh Junior at Bethpage State Park features a field of 99 players representing 19 states and Canada. Two honorable mention Polo Golf Junior All-Americans and 28 juniors from the state of New York are competing this week. Past champions of the AJGA's 12th annual New York event include Sergio Garcia, Grace Park and Brittany Straza.

Anna Grzebien of Saunderstown, R.I., will try to follow in the footsteps of her sisters Lauren and Mary Ellen Grzebien who took home victories at this event in 1999 and 2000. Anna holds a four-stroke lead going into the final round and plans to keep up her consistent golf.

"I hit almost all the fairways today and two-putted every time," the 16-year-old Grzebien said. "I'm just going to try and do the same thing I've been doing and go out and play consistently."

Theresa Paik of Silver Springs, Md., posted the low round of the day in the Girls Division, firing a 1-under-par 69 to claim second place with a two-day total of 4-over-par 144. Jenny Suh of Fairfax, Va., fired a 4-over-par 74 to stand in third place with a two-day total of 10-over-par 150.

In the Boys Division, Blaine Peffley stayed atop the leaderboard with a solid second-round score of even-par 70, for a two-day total of 136.

"I converted a lot of up-and-downs today," the 16-year-old Peffley said. "I didn't hit nearly as many greens as yesterday, but I was able to save par when I needed to."

Peffley is looking to take home his second AJGA championship in two weeks after winning the AJGA ClubCorp Junior Players Championship last week and noted he has really enjoyed his experience at Bethpage State Park.

"It's beautiful here," Peffley said about the Bethpage State Park facility, which will host the 2002 U.S. Open. "This would be a great event to win. Tomorrow I'm going to go out with the exact same game plan and hope that a few more putts fall."

A duo of golfers shares second place with two-round totals of 139. Jordan Hasbrouck of Spring, Texas, and David Yoon of Irvine, Calif., are tied at 1-under-par. Chris McLaughlin of Northport, N.Y., and Matt McLean of Miami, Fla., wrapped up second-round action tied for fourth at even-par 140. McLean also fired the low round of the day with a sizzling 3-under-par 67.

Final-round action gets underway Thursday on Bethpage State Park's Red Course with tee times beginning at 7 a.m. For more information on the AJGA Marsh Junior at Bethpage State Park, contact tournament headquarters at (516) 249-0670.
