OVERTON GRABS FIRST-ROUND LEAD IN AJGA AVILA JUNIOR CLASSIC
Mallory Code sits atop Girls Division with a 2-under-par 70

TAMPA, FLA. -Jason Overton of Palm Harbor, Fla., carded nines of 36-33 en route to a 3-under-par 69 for the first-round lead in the AJGA Avila Junior Classic at Avila Golf & Country Club. In the Girls Division, Tampa native Mallory Code, shot nines of 35-35 for a 2-under-par 70.

The AJGA Avila Junior Classic at Avila Golf & Country Club, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, features 84 players including nine Polo Golf Junior All-Americans, ages 13-18, representing 16 states, Bermuda and Japan.

Overton, who's playing in his third AJGA event this summer, had five birdies in the first-round.
"I putted really well with my new belly putter," Overton said. "I hit the ball well and didn't have to scramble. I found the fairways and greens a lot."

The Florida Gulf Coast University signee has not been in this position before.

"This is the first time I've been the leader in the clubhouse," Overton said. "I feel comfortable with the course and I'm comfortable with my ability."

Chasing Overton is qualifier entrant Ty Callahan of Tampa with a 1-under-par 71. Alex Wilson of Coral Gables, Fla., James Dickey of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Marco Poccia of Gansevoort, N.Y., are in a third-place tie with even-par 72s.

In the Girls Division, Code had three birdies in her round.

"I went out and wanted to make a lot of pars," Code said. "I didn't need anything flashy, I just need to stay consistent."

The 16-year-old is playing on her home course and is seeking her fourth AJGA win after teaming with her older sister, Whitney, to win the Justin Leonard/Deloitte & Touche Junior Team Championship earlier this summer.

"I have an advantage over the field because I know the course," Code said. "But, I also have a lot more pressure because there are more expectations for me to do well in this tournament."
Jackie Beers of Midlothian, Va., is in second-place with a 1-over-par 73. Tied for third-place are Nicole Melton of San Antonio, Texas, Marci Turner of Thompkinsville, Ky., and Cindy Shin of Coppell, Texas.
