REIBER CLINCHES MEDALIST HONORS AT ASHWORTH JUNIOR AT HAGERSTOWN
Stout and Kenny finish runners-up at Black Rock Golf Course
HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The third time was a charm for Kevin Reiber of Waynesboro, Pa., after he carded three birdies in the final round for a 1-under-par 70 and a tournament total 138. Rick Stout of Pollocksville, N.C., and Doug Kenny of Roswell, Ga., finished seven strokes behind Reiber with 1-over-par 145s.
The Ashworth Junior at Hagerstown was a 36-hole tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Black Rock Golf Course in Hagerstown, Md. The tournament featured 84 of the nation’s premier junior golfers, ages 12-18, from 22 states, including 11 from Maryland.
After playing in the Ashworth Junior at Hagerstown in 2002 and 2003, Reiber was ready to take the tournament’s top honors. He finished 13th in 2002 with a tournament total 75-75—150 and finished seventh in 2003 with 75-76—151.
“It feels really good, this is a good win for me,” Reiber said. “The Ashworth Junior at Hagerstown has a strong field and I know a lot of the players that come out here.”
Reiber had four birdies on the round but struggled with the par 3s as he picked up bogeys on Nos. 2, 7 and 17.
“I hit the ball really well this weekend,” said Reiber. “If you put the ball within 20 feet of the hole enough times, you are going to hit some putts.”
The 17-year-old high school senior lives less than 25 minutes from Black Rock Golf Course and says that he gets to play the course often.
“I’ve played a few tournaments out here and come out with some friends regularly,” said Reiber. “I like the course because you get to use your wedges a lot and that works well with my game.”
Rounding out the top 10 was Benjamin Fellman of Fleetwood, Pa., Chas Golibart of Olney, Md., and John Buchanan IV of Fairfax, Va., with 2-over-par 146s. Cory Amory of Crozet, Va., finished seventh with 147, while Cole Willcox of Wayne, Pa., Brad Myers of Chatham, Va., and Christian Martin of McLean, Va., finished in a tie for eighth with 148s.
The Ashworth Junior Series was created specifically for first-time AJGA members or those members who have not yet participated in an AJGA Open event, AJGA Invitational or Nike Golf Junior All-Star Series event in the current calendar year and/or the previous calendar year. Juniors ages 12-18 are eligible for entry into the boys-only events. For those who are eligible, participation is limited to one Preseason event and one Postseason event per calendar year as long as they have not yet participated in an AJGA Open event, AJGA Invitational or Nike Golf Junior All-Star Series event.
