REIBER JUMPS THE MASON-DIXON LINE AND CAPTURES THREE-SHOT LEAD
Three players tied for second place going into Sunday’s final round

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Waynesboro, Pa., native Kevin Reiber took advantage of a 4-under-par 32 on the back nine at Black Rock Golf Course to take control of the first-round lead at the Ashworth Junior at Hagerstown. Reiber, who lives just 25 minutes from the golf course, has a three-shot cushion going into Sunday’s final round after firing a 68.

The Ashworth Junior at Hagerstown is a 36-hole tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Black Rock Golf Course in Hagerstown, Md. The tournament features 84 of the nation’s premier junior golfers, ages 12-18, from 22 states, including 11 from Maryland.

Reiber was solid throughout his round, which began with ten straight pars. Starting on No. 11, Reiber caught fire, making four birdies on the back nine, including three during a four-hole stretch, to finish the first round with a 3-under-par 68.
“I didn’t make many putts on the front nine so I couldn’t make any birdies,” Reiber said. “I got the putter going on the back nine and was able to make some tap-in birdies on the par 5s.”

Reiber, who will be celebrating his high school homecoming Saturday night, is very familiar with the golf course and feels that his course knowledge will help him in his quest to capture the tournament crown.

“I’m good friends with the golf pro here and usually play here at least once a month,” Reiber said.

Three players are tied for second place three shots behind Reiber with one round to play. Doug Kenny of Roswell, Ga., John Buchanan IV of Fairfax, Va., and Rick Stout of Pollocksville, N.C., all shot matching 71s and will be paired with Reiber on Sunday.

Nick Mayo of Mahopac, N.Y., Jeffery Hinds of Pittsburgh, Pa., Chas Golibart of Olney, Md., and Cory Amory of Crozet, Va., are tied for fifth place after carding even-par 72s.

The Ashworth Junior series was created specifically for first-time AJGA members or those members who have not yet participated in an AJGA Open event, AJGA Invitational or Nike Golf Junior All-Star Series event in the current calendar year and/or the previous calendar year. Juniors ages 12-18 are eligible for entry into the boys-only events. For those who are eligible, participation is limited to one Preseason event and one Postseason event per calendar year as long as they have not yet participated in an AJGA Open event, AJGA Invitational or Nike Golf Junior All-Star Series event.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The largest association of its kind, the AJGA has a junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 50 states and 30 foreign countries.

Titleist, the AJGA’s National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association’s success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, a supporter of the AJGA since 1983, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004.

The final round will be an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Sunday at Black Rock Golf Course. For more information about the Ashworth Junior at Hagerstown, please contact tournament headquarters at (240) 313-2820.
