OLSON SHINES IN SUNNY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Cho and Chin share Girls Division lead with matching 69’s

COTO DE CAZA, Calif. – As the top scores in the Boys Division hovered in the low-70s for most of the day, Eddie Olson, 17, of Aptos, Calif., made a charge later in the afternoon, recording six birdies and only one bogey during a round of 5-under-par 67. In the Girls Division, Sooji Cho, 16, of Glendale, Calif., and Jane Chin, 17, of Huntington Beach, Calif., share the lead after shooting matching 3-under-par 69’s.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Family Toyota/Family Honda Junior presented by Cox Media is being held at the South Course at the Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club. One-hundred and nineteen players, including 111 from California, are entered in the 54-hole stroke play event.

Olson’s consistent play allowed him to develop a two-shot cushion heading into Thursday’s second round. He made birdie on three of his first six holes and then finished the round with a bang, carding birdies on Nos. 17 and 18. The only flaw on Olson’s card came on the par-4 7th, where he made bogey.

“I hit all the par-5’s in two so I had a lot of eagle putts,” he said. “I hit a lot of greens and fairways and took advantage of the easier holes.”

Although Olson’s round bested the field by two shots, he still feels a lower score is possible later in the week.

“I just have to keep playing the way I’m playing and see what happens from there,” Olson commented. “Hopefully I’ll be able to make some birdies on some of the more difficult holes tomorrow.”

Erik Flores of Grass Valley, Calif., sits alone in second place after firing a 3-under-par 69. Flores’ round included five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 6th. Doug Fortner of Tustin, Calif., is in third place after shooting a 2-under-par 70.

A host of players are deadlocked in a tie for fourth place after matching rounds of 1-under-par 71. Ross Canavan of Rancho Mirage, Calif., Garrett Logan of Henderson, Nev., David Cape of Santa Clarita, Calif., and Sasan Shahi of Laguna Niguel, Calif., lurk four shots behind the leader and will look to make a run at the top of the leaderboard Thursday.

In the Girls Division, Cho was also a model of consistency, making five birdies during her first round. Cho, who took top honors at the True Temper Junior Open in July, was happy with her performance.

“I played well,” Cho said. “I just need to keep hitting it straight and keep a good putting stroke going.”

Chin finished strong to earn her share of the lead by making three of her seven birdies on Nos. 16, 17 and 18.

“Everything was pretty good,” Chin said. “My drives could have been a little better but I was pretty happy with the round.”

Jennifer Osborn of Huntington Beach, Calif., is in third place going into Thursday after recording a 1-under-par 71.
