ANOTHER 3-UNDER-PAR 68 PUTS BROUSSARD IN LEAD

Hines emerges as the Girls Division leader with matching 3-over-par 74s

GARLAND, Texas- The sky was gloomy and the rain clouds were threatening, but Anthony Broussard turned up the Texas heat with another on-fire round of 3-under-par 68, taking the lead in the Boys Division in the second round of the I.R.I. Golf Group Oakridge Junior at Oakridge Country Club.  Caney Hines snuck up from behind and grabbed a one-stroke lead over Glory Yang with a second round total of 3-over-par 74.

The I.R.I. Golf Group Oakridge Junior is a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association. The event features 99 of the nation’s premier junior golfers, ages 12-18, from 11 states. The field is composed of 70 “Lone Star State” residents.

Broussard, 18, of Beaumont, Texas, found his consistency to be fantastic.  With a pair of 68s, he ended the second round with a two-day total of 6-under-par 136.

“It’s really exciting to emerge as the leader,” he said.  “I played hard today, so it was well-deserved.”

Broussard found success in the second round with four birdies he made on Nos. 1, 9, 10 and 13, one bogey and no three-putts.  He aimed to make par on each hole and let the birdies fall.

“To stay ahead in the final round, I need to keep giving myself opportunities to make birdie,” he said.  “If I hit a bad shot, I need to recover with nothing more than a bogey.”

Behind Broussard are Jeff Howard of Plano, Texas, at 137, Nick Williams of New Braunfels, Texas, and Sang Yi of Carrollton, Texas, at 140, and Austin Schauer of Spring, Texas, at 141.

Hines, 18, of San Antonio, Texas, came into the scoring tent with a big smile.  She said that she had a rough start, but the turning point for her round came when she birdied Nos. 6, 7 and 8.  Hines finished the second round with a two-day total of 6-over-par 148.

“I had three doubles on the front nine and I thought they were going to make my round slide downhill,” she said.  “Luckily, the five birdies made up for the doubles.”

The competition will be tough in the final round, but Hines already has a strategy in place.

“I’m going to work on my driver,” she said.  “I need to be more deliberate with every shot.  Every shot is going to count with it being so tight at the top.  I’m going to try to stay calm so I won’t let anything get away from me.  If I think I’m good to go, it’ll bite me.”

Behind Hines are Glory Yang of Murrieta, Calif., at 149, and Wonjoo Choi of Murrieta, Calif., Raelyn Smith of Odessa, Texas, and Jane Rah of Torrance, Calif., at 152.

Final-round tee times will run from 7:30 a.m. – 12:18 p.m., Thursday at Oakridge Country Club.
