THOMPSON LEADS BY 1-STROKE AT HARBOR SPRINGS

Maunu’s hot putting puts her in first

HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. — Josh Thompson of Indianapolis, Ind., leads the Boys Division after the first round of the AJGA Boyne Highlands Junior.  Thompson fired a 3-under-par 69, and holds a 1-stroke lead over four players.  Lisa Maunu of St. Thomas, Ontario, leads the Girls Division, finishing with a first-round 69.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Boyne Highlands Junior is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at the Boyne Highlands Resort – Moor Course.  The tournament features 144 of the nation’s premier junior golfers from 17 states and Canada.

Thompson, 17, carded a 35 on the front-side and finished with a 34 on the back.  Thompson was able to play virtually error-free golf during his round, making 15 pars and three birdies.  He credited his driver with giving him an opportunity to make several birdies.  Thompson was able to make birdie on Nos. 5, 12 and 18.

“I have been hitting my driver pretty well coming in and was able to keep it straight today,” Thompson said.  “I only missed one or two fairways, which gave me lots of opportunities to make birdies.  I was able to use my driver on almost every hole and that really played into my game,” he said.

Thompson is hoping that his strong first round, coupled with two more solid days of play, will give him his first AJGA victory.

“It would be nice to win and finish strong,” the upcoming high school senior said.  “This is my first year playing out of state and I would like to place well.”

Four players trail Thompson after carding 2-under-par 70s.  DJ Magee of St. Charles, Ill., Clark Klaasen of Grand Rapids, Mich., Brandon Edwards of Peterborough, Ontario, and Andy Connell of Lima, Ohio, all sit one-stroke back.  Andrew Miller of Oakland Township, Mich., Brad Revell of Kingston, Ontario, and Ryan Linton of Lake Forest, Ill., all shot 71 and sit tied for sixth, after the first round.

Maunu, who is playing in her first career AJGA event, posted the lowest round of her career.  She was able to take advantage of a hot putter and make five birdies during her round.  It was birdies on Nos. 2 and 3 which jumpstarted her first round.

“I was able to hit my approach shots close on both holes and that carried over onto the back-nine,” Maunu said.  “I hit my shots tight and everything went really well.  This course is playing at a good length for my game and I hope to continue to hit the ball consistently,” Maunu commented.  “I just need to make one putt at a time, like I did today.”

Maunu holds a 2-stroke lead over Carling Coffing of Middletown, Ohio, who shot a first-round 71.  Coffing, who will be attending the Ohio State University this fall, carded nines of 37 and 34 on day one.  Katie Sylvan of San Diego, Calif., recorded a 73 and is four shots off the lead.

The second round of the AJGA Boyne Highlands Junior will begin at 7:30 a.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees.
