CHA TAKES THE LEAD BY ONE STROKE

Smith takes the lead at 1-over in the Girls Division

VANDENBERG AFB, Calif.—Cool temperatures, difficult holes and tight fairways were some of the challenges that Tim Cha faced and conquered by shooting a 3-under-par 69, placing him in the lead for the first round of the AJGA Marshallia Ranch Junior.  Nicole Smith rose out of the pack in the Girls Division with a first round score of 1-over-par 73.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Marshallia Ranch Junior features 84 players from ten states and Canada, including 73 California natives.  The fifth annual Marshallia Ranch Junior is a 54-hole, stroke play tournament that is being held at Marshallia Ranch Golf Course for the third consecutive year.

Cha, 17, of Chino Hills, Calif., said he had a good feeling after the first round because of the three consecutive birdies he made on Nos. 10, 11 and 12, which were the highlights of his day.  The six total birdies he carded gave him an advantage throughout the round to keep his score down.

“My best shot was on No. 6,” he said.  “I made a 50-footer uphill which really got me going for the day.”

Cha hopes to continue his low scoring in the second round.

“I’m going to try to focus on each shot and take it one at a time,” he said.  “I don’t want to choke in the second round and shoot in the 80s like I did at my last tournament.  I’m going to do what I can to play my best.”

Behind Cha with a 2-under-par 70 is Roberto Galletti, Jr. of Vallejo, Calif., and behind him with 1-under-par 71s are Sean McNamara of Monte Sereno, Calif., and Doug Fortner of Tustin, Calif.  At even-par are Garrett Sapp of Cerritos, Calif., Ray Suhandynata of Petaluma, Calif., Larry Wong of Diamond Bar, Calif., Michael Miller of Fresno, Calif., and Lee Harris of Fort Morgan, Calif.

Smith, 17, of Riverside, Calif., said she shot a decent score for the first round.

“I didn’t strike the ball as well as I wanted,” she said.  “Hitting 14 greens helped a lot though and I had a pretty good mix of birdies and bogies.  I plan on being more aggressive in tomorrow’s round.”

Smith said her best shot of the day was on No. 3 when she almost holed out.  After a three-putt for bogie, it couldn’t have happened at a better time.

Following Smith are Allison Goodman of San Diego, at 2-over-par 74, and Xyra Suyetsugu of Honolulu, Hawaii, Emily Cannon of Belvedere, Calif., Charlene Kamimura of West Covina, Calif., and Allison Ek of Cypress, Calif., who shot 3-over-par 75s.
