KROPP AND STREB TAKE CONTROL OF OSSO JUNIOR

Espinosa and Wright head to final round in deadlock

EDMOND, Okla. Two soon-to-be-teammates at Edmond North High School are tied for the lead after the first two rounds in the Boys Division of the OSSO Junior at Oak Tree. William Kropp and Robert Streb, both of Edmond, Okla., are at 2-over-par 145 after two rounds.

Lauren Espinosa of Hickory Creek, Texas, and Heather Wright of Houston, Texas, are also knotted atop the leaderboard in the Girls Division at 5-over-par 145.

The OSSO Junior at Oak Tree is a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Oak Tree Country Club’s East Course. The tournament features 142 players, ages 12-18, from 15 states, including 59 from Oklahoma and 39 from Texas.

After firing an opening round 1-under-par 69, Kropp fired a second-round 73.

“It feels good (to be leading),” Kropp said. “I’m hitting the ball straight and made some birdies.”

Streb battled through a rainy morning and managed three birdies en route to shooting a 2-over-par 72.

“I played pretty well,” Streb said.  “I managed the greens and aimed at the flagstick when I could.”

Jonathan Myers of Ponca City, Okla., is in third at 5-over-par, while Matthew Rubis of Fargo, N.D., is in fourth at 6-over-par. Phillip Bryan of Mustang, Okla., and Austin Bowman of Pryor, Okla., are in third at 147.

In the Girls Division, Espinosa began the second round four strokes off the lead, but made a charge with back-to-back birdies on hole Nos. 5 and 6.  Her second-round 71 was the day’s low round for the girls.

“I feel like I played extremely better today,” Espinosa said.  “I was hitting greens and am really confident going into the final round.”

Heading to the University of Oklahoma to continue her golf career, Wright is on the verge of making her final AJGA appearance a memorable one. After a first-round leading 70, Wright fired a 5-over-par 75 Wednesday.

“I didn’t make some par putts,” Wright said, “but I hit my driver well and left myself with some good iron shots.”

Michaela Cavener of Tulsa, Okla., is alone in third place and one shot off the lead at 146.
