LANDRY, FAST TIED AT EVEN PAR AT TPC OF LOUISIANA

Reed shoots 1-over-par 73, extending Girls Division lead to four strokes

NEW ORLEANS – The TPC of Louisiana continued to claim victims in Wednesday’s second round, but Matt Fast of Hattiesburg, Miss., tamed the beast with a 2-under-par 70 to force a tie at even par with Morgan Landry of Lafayette, La., heading into the final round of the Fore!Kids Junior at TPC of Louisiana. In the Girls Division, Christie Reed of Oak Ridge, Tenn., continued her solid play with a 1-over-par 73 to take a four-stroke lead.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fore!Kids Junior at TPC of Louisiana is being held at TPC of Louisiana in New Orleans. The 54-hole stroke-play event features 84 of the nation’s premier golfers, ages 12-18, from 13 states and Paraguay.

Landry, who shot a 2-under-par 70 in Tuesday’s first round, started on No. 10 and struggled to a 39 on his first nine, but rallied with birdies at Nos. 2 and 8 to get back to even par for the tournament.

“After that start I was nervous that I was going to shoot an 80 or something,” Landry said. “I just had to regroup and start hitting my driver in the fairway.”

On a day when the second-round Boys Division scoring average was 78.5, Landry said control off the tee was key to course management.

“For the first time, the driver or 3-wood is the most important club – you’ve got to hit it in the fairway,” Landry said.

Fast, who shot the low round of the day, sunk a 25-foot eagle putt on the par-5 second hole to get to even par and vault himself into the final pairing.

“If you told me at the beginning of the day that I’d come out and shoot 2-under, I’d take it because the course is playing pretty tough,” Fast said. “I’m not a big fan of having the lead on the last day, but I feel pretty good about being tied.”

Timothy Byrd of Laplace, La., is one stroke back with a two-day total of 145, and Thomas Hugghins of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., trails by three strokes at 147. Mark Odenthal of Beaumont, Texas, Weldon Martin of Houston, Texas, Freddie Janneck of Madison, Miss., and Jeff Howard of Plano, Texas, are tied for fifth place at 149.

Reed had difficulties of her own on her first nine, shooting a 4-over-par 40, but birdied three of her last six holes to give herself a four-shot cushion heading into the final round.

“I made a lot of really clutch putts from four and five feet, and that’s really important if you want to win this tournament,” Reed said. “I’m really excited to play tomorrow. I feel like I’ve gotten all of the badness out.”

Caney Hines of San Antonio, Texas, shot a 4-over-par 76 and trails Reed by four strokes, and Jessica Hamilton of Rockville, Md., carded a 75 for a two-day total of 152.
