LANDRY LEADS BOYS AT FORE!KIDS WITH ONLY ROUND UNDER PAR

Rolex Junior All-American Reed leads Girls Division by one stroke

NEW ORLEANS – With the sole sub-par score in Tuesday’s first round of the Fore!Kids Junior at TPC of Louisiana, Morgan Landry of Lafayette, La., leads the Boys Division with a 2-under-par 70.  At even-par 72, Rolex Junior All-American Christie Reed of Oak Ridge, Tenn., leads the Girls Division by one stroke.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fore!Kids Junior at TPC of Louisiana is being held at TPC of Louisiana in New Orleans. The 54-hole stroke-play event features 84 of the nation’s premier golfers, ages 12-18, from 13 states and Paraguay.

While Landry birdied No. 1, No. 11 and chipped in for birdie on No. 13, he said his best shot of the day came in the form of a par on the par-4 twelfth.

“I hooked my driver into the fairway bunker but took a 3-wood to within 15 feet of the hole, then two-putted for par,” Landry said.

With only 23 putts, Landry attributed the low round to his confidence around the green.

“My driver started to get shaky in the middle of the round, but my short game showed up,” said Landry, who has signed a National Letter of Intent to play golf for the University of LouisianaLafayette next year.

Trailing Landry by 3 strokes, each with a 1-over-par 73, are Michael Gregory of Brandon, Miss., Reese McCauley of Parkland, Fla., Mick  Partridge of Glen Cove, N.Y., Thomas Hugghins of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Timothy Byrd of Laplace, La.

Reed, who has five AJGA victories and will play golf at the University of Tennessee next year, was sentimental about her low round.

“This is one of my last tournaments as a junior,” she said.  “So it would be nice to go out with a bang. I could see myself going much lower tomorrow if I have better course management.”

Reed’s round was highlighted by birdies on Nos. 1, 11 and 18.  The birdie on the par-5 eleventh was a result of a sand wedge shot to within an inch of the hole.

Caney Hines of San Antonio, Texas, follows Reed by one stroke with a 1-over-par 73.  At 74, Rebecca Kuhn of Miami is in third place after the first-round of the tournament.
