LEE FIRES OPENING ROUND SIXTY-NINE TO LEAD NIKE JUNIOR AT LAS CRUCES

Karle leads girls with only sub-par day after first round

LAS CRUCES, N.M. Richard Lee of Vancouver, B.C., started out hot within the sandy confines of Picacho Hills Country Club and never looked back as he opened the Nike Golf Junior at Las Cruces by firing a 3-under-par 69 to lead the Boys Division.

Taylore Karle of Scottsdale, Ariz., led the way in the Girls Division by being the only girl to break par in the opening round with a 1-under-par 71.

The Nike Golf Junior at Las Cruces is a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Picacho Hills Country Club. The tournament features 80 of the nation’s premier junior golfers, ages 12-15, from 26 states and Canada.

Being only one of two boys to fire a sub-par round, Lee birdied four of his first five holes and did not have a single three-putt.

“My shots were pretty good all day,” Lee said.  “I left myself with some short putts, but I don’t think my score is low enough.  I will probably do better tomorrow.”

David Lipsky of La Canada, Calif., trails Lee by two stokes after a 1-under-par 71. Travis Moore of El Paso, Texas , and Jordan Russell of College Station, Texas, are tied for third at even par. Four others are tied for fifth at 1-over-par.

Karle managed to fire her sub-par round by playing consistent golf.  Karle carded four birdies and only three bogies, and leads Jenny Kim of Los Angeles, Calif., by four strokes.

“I started off good,” Karle said. “I hit the fairways and the greens, so I’m happy with that. I’m just playing the greens safe to avoid three-putts.”

While Kim shot a 3-over-par 75, Wonjoo Choi of Murrieta, Calif., is in third place with a 5-over-par 77.
