LIM FIRES 67 TO TAKE FIRST ROUND LEAD IN BOYS DIVISION
Chin leads Girls Division after first round at Angel Park Golf Club

LAS VEGASThe temperatures were high and the scores were low Tuesday at the Las Vegas Founders Junior Golf Championship with Daniel Lim shooting a 4-under-par 67 and Jane Chin leading the Girls Division with a 3-under-par 68.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Las Vegas Founders Junior Golf Championship features 85 players from 11 states, including 11 Nevada natives. The event, being played for the 14th time, is a 54-hole, stroke play tournament that is being held at Angel Park Golf ClubMountain Course and began on Tuesday.

Lim, 17, of Gilroy, Calif., predicted low first-round scores because he played well during the practice round.

“Putting was everything out there,” he said. “It’s all about who makes the most birdies.”

Lim was able to record five total birdies because he said he mentally thought out all the shots.

“If you can stay focused, you can make a lot of birdies out here,” he said. “I’m going to make as many birdies as I can.”

In a three-way tie for second are Nick Poper of Lakewood, Calif., Kyle Takesue of Cerritos, Calif., and Brian Kim of Yorba Linda, Calif., with 3-under-par 68s. Firing 2-under-par 69s are Bio Kim of Tustin, Calif., Damian Yi of La Crescenta, Calif., Peter Deltondo of Laguna Hills, Calif., Joshua Kelley of Upland, Calif., Jordan Cox of Redwood City, Calif., and Rory Hie of Lakewood, Calif.

Chin, 17, of Huntington Beach, Calif., shot a 33 on the front and a 35 on the back, making her the first-day Girls Division leader.

“It’s my first time being at the top, so that feels really good,” she said. “I’m pretty excited to see what happens tomorrow.”

Chin hit her irons hard and accurately, reaching 17 total greens. She said the area she needed the most improvement on was her putting.

“I need to try to find the speed of the green,” she said. “I just need to keep scoring low.”

Behind Chin are Tiffany Joh of San Diego, Calif., with a 2-under-par 69, Katy Barrett of Las Vegas, with a 3-over-par 74, Dawn Shockley of Glen Haven, Colo., with a 4-over-par 75, and with scores of 5-over-par 76s are Jennifer Yoo of Carritos, Calif., and Mackenzie Mack of Las Vegas.
