HARMAN TIED FOR LEAD IN QUEST TO DEFEND TITLE

Gates seeks to capture the coveted crown after second round in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Defending champion Brian Harman of Savannah, Ga., and Florida native Robert Gates, Jr., of Gainesville, share the lead after the second round of the FootJoy Boys Invitational at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.  The co-leaders tallied a two-day total of 6-under-par 138 to hold the top spot.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the FootJoy Boys Invitational features 101 players, ages 12-18, from 24 states, Chile, Japan, China and South Africa. The tournament field includes 41 Rolex Junior All-Americans and 14 competitors from the host state of North Carolina.  The 72-hole stroke play event is being held at the par-72 Forest Oaks Country Club, home of the PGA TOUR’s Chrysler Classic of Greensboro.

Harman entered Wednesday’s round in a four-way tie and managed to maintain his top position by garnering seven birdies, six on the front nine to post an impressive 31 at the turn.

“I hit a lot of good iron and tee shots and made some of mid-range putts. My putting has really been a problem,” Harman stated.  “I should be leading this tournament by a lot right now.  I really do not want to make any more mental errors, so I have to put my mistakes behind me going into the next two rounds.”

Gates, who recently signed with Texas A&M, started off solid with a birdie on No. 1, his first of five birdies on the day.  In addition to his birdie on No. 1, the 17-year-old high school senior collected birdies on Nos. 5, 13, 14 and 15.

“I can’t think of anywhere better to play than this course,” Gates said.  “Everything is just perfect.  I was able to make almost every putt I had, though I lipped out a few.  I just have to keep the birdies coming for the next two rounds.”

Trailing Harman and Gates by a stroke are Jon McLean of Weston, Fla., and Matthew Swan of Montgomery, Ala., both at 139.

Sitting alone in fifth at 140 is California native Daniel Miller of Santa Maria. Just one stroke back at 141 are fellow Californians Erik Flores of Grass Valley and Jordan Cox of Redwood City, along with Robert Riesen of Pinehurst, N.C.

Rounding out the top-10 at 2-under-par 142 are Philip Francis of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Mu Hu of Shen Zhen, China; and Cole Peevler of Koekuk, Iowa.
