AHN GOES FROM QUALIFIER MEDALIST TO TOURNAMENT CHAMPION

Yocum maintains lead to pick up the Girls Division title at the AJGA Glenwild Junior

PARK CITY, Utah— Peter Ahn fired a course-record, 4-under-par 67 Thursday to pick up the Boys Division title at the AJGA Glenwild Junior.  Shannon Yocum maintained her lead with a final-round score of 7-over-par 78 to claim the Girls Division title.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Glenwild Junior featured 84 players from 14 states and Canada, including eight Utah natives. The event, in its inaugural year, is a 54-hole stroke play tournament that was held at Glenwild Golf Club & Spa.

Ahn, 17, of Victoria, British Columbia, earned his first AJGA win after he finished the tournament with a three-day total of 1-over-par 214.  With three birdies on the front nine and three more on the back, Ahn came from behind to pick up a win at only his second AJGA event. Ahn earned a spot in the tournament after medaling in Sunday’s qualifier.

“It feels great being able to come back and win after I qualified on Sunday,” he said.  “I feel like I played pretty consistent throughout all the rounds, but there were a few holes today where I greatly improved.  This was important to help me get ahead.”

Ahn said that this win gave him the confidence he needed to keep him going for the rest of the year.

Coming in behind Ahn were Jordan Fowles, 17, of Delta, Utah, with a three-day total of 218, followed by third-place finisher Drew Kittleson, 15, of Scottsdale, Ariz., at 221.  Tied for fourth place at 222 were Jake Yount, 17, of Danville, Calif., and Tyler Smith, 16, of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

Yocum, 17, of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., also picked up her first AJGA win after finishing the tournament with a three-day total of 227.

“I had a good round out there today,” she said.  “It was extremely competitive and it didn’t let up, but I used the competition to my advantage.”

Yocum said she will take a lot out of this experience because it was her second AJGA tournament, as well.

“I learned how to stay in there and stay in the moment,” she said.  “I had some bad shots on the front nine, but I didn’t let it get me down and I kept going.  Coming into this I wanted to finish in the top three.  After the second round, I felt pretty confident that I could win.”

Following Yocum are Brooke Todare, 18, of Paradise Valley, Ariz., with a three-day total of 229, and Sara Gogolak, 16, of Phoenix, who finished third at 234.
