KENTUCKY NATIVE JOHNSON LEADS THE WAY FOR QUALIFIERS AT 72
Girls Division qualifier Hong takes medalist honors

ASHLAND, Ky. – Samuel Johnson of Goshen, Ky., tops the list of nine Boys Division qualifiers for the Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior, with a 2-over-par 72 on Monday. Jennifer Hong of Windermere, Fla., is the top Girls Division qualifier with 6-over-par 76.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior Qualifier featured 49 players, 43 boys and 6 girls ages 12-18 from 10 states, including 23 from the state of Kentucky.

In the Boys Division, Johnson carded an eagle on the first hole as well as two birdies on the day to earn his way into his first AJGA tournament.

“I was really putting well today," said 16-year-old Johnson. "I had no trouble getting off the tee.  That’s all that I needed today because the fairways are not very long.”

The Boys Division qualifiers are Gregg Morton of Union, Ky., Chase Carpenter of Salyersville, Ky., David Mays of Ashland, Ky., Joey Wright of Farmers, Ky.,  Aaron Boggs of Madison, W. Va., Matt Langan of Prospect, Ky., and Austin Ehlenfeldt of Beaver Dam, Wis.  Lawrence Nuzzo of Louisville, Ky., earned the remaining qualifier spot in a sudden-death -playoff with a par on the first playoff hole.

Also earning a tournament exemption to add to their Performance Based Entry status in lieu of playing in this week’s event were Greg Feldmann of Wellesley, Mass., Devin Christman of Versailles, Ohio, and Alex Martin of Middletown, Ohio.

Last week’s winner of the AJGA Windy City Junior, 17-year-old Jennifer Hong carded 37-39—76 to take medalist honors.

Cheris Evans of Inez, Ky., made a birdie on No. 12 bringing her total to 82 on the day earning the final spot in this week’s tournament.

The AJGA Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior, which is celebrating its 21st anniversary at Bellefonte Country Club, features 120 players from 22 states. The Junior-Am is slated for a 1 p.m. start on Tuesday at Bellefonte Country Club, with the 54-hole stroke play event set for a 7 a.m. Wednesday, June 23rd start.
