THIRTEEN JUNIORS ADD THEIR NAME TO HEATHER FARR CLASSIC TOURNAMENT FIELD
AJGA conducts a weekend of tournament qualifiers at Longbow Golf Club

MESA, Ariz. - Attempting to qualify for next weekend's Heather Farr Classic, 55 boys and 23 girls hit the links Saturday at Longbow Golf Club to compete in the first of two AJGA qualifiers. Jordan Cox of Redwood City, Calif., and Christine Brijalba of El Paso, Texas, captured medalist honors in their respective divisions.

Cox, who won his first AJGA event last year at the Ashworth Preseason Junior at Diablo Grande and advanced to the finals of the 2003 U.S. Junior Amateur, received an early birthday present Saturday after firing rounds of 34-35—69, granting him entry into next weekend’s tournament.

“I missed the tournament deadline, so I decided to sign up for the qualifier,” the high school sophomore said.

Finishing 2-under-par 69, Cox was rather pleased with his performance.

“I had a solid round considering the playing conditions,” Cox, who turns 16 on Sunday, said. “The greens were really firm, which required hitting high shots in order to keep the ball on the green. It was also really windy out there, which made it tough to choose the right club.”

Despite the given challenges, Cox sunk a 33-foot putt for birdie on No. 3 and also carded an eagle on the 554-yard, par-5 sixth hole.

“I have been really working hard on my game and it is slowly coming together,” Cox said. “My goal for next weekend is to win, which would be a great start to the season.”

Joining Cox next weekend at the Heather Farr Classic will be fellow California natives Jordan Francis of Yorba Linda; Doug Fortner of Tustin; Joe Greiner of Santa Clarita; C.J. Vuytowecz of Pauma Valley; Andrew Patipaksiri of Cypress; and Cameron Tringale of Laguna Niguel. Local Dan Saltz of Scottsdale also qualified.

Brijabla earned the bragging rights in the Girls Division with consistent nines of 37-37—74.

“I struggled all day,” the 17-year-old said. “I had to grind out every shot and just hoped for the best.”

Regardless of how Brijalba felt about her round, she carded birdies on Nos. 5, 9 and 15.

“I had a lot of tricky putts, but somehow I managed to pull it all together,” the high school junior said.

California natives Heather Wilson of San Diego and Patty Chawalitmetha of Bellflower; Kristen Schelling of Mesa, and Justine Yu of Las Vegas round out the remaining qualifiers in the Girls Division.

Titleist, the AJGA’s National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association’s success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, a supporter of the AJGA since 1983, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004.

The second qualifier for the Heather Farr Classic will be held Sunday with a 1 p.m. shotgun start at Longbow Golf Club.
