Invitational of the Year: Rolex Tournament of Champions

The Rolex Tournament of Champions is the pinnacle of many players’ careers, and the 2012 championship continued the tradition that began in 1978. The tournament committee’s dedication to the 132 players and their families was a top priority, and the AJGA has recognized these individuals by naming the event the Invitational of the Year.

“Being the recipient of this award is impossible without the unselfish support of our member volunteers and fine staff who worked long hours to make this tournament a special event for the players and their families,” said Bob Covington, Tournament Chairman of the event. “Of course, there is no finer organization than the AJGA; they are true professionals in all they do.”

The Rolex Tournament of Champions celebrated its 35th year, with 132 players showcasing their talents throughout the 72-hole stroke play event. During the tournament week, players, families, volunteers, coaches and staff received complimentary breakfast and lunch. Aside from the impressive performances on the golf course, juniors also participated in Care for the Course and were treated with an ice cream truck after the second round. After the third round, the entire field was invited to the prestigious Rolex Dinner of Champions which honored the USGA-AJGA Presidents’ Leadership Award recipients.

This will be the second Invitational of the Year honor for the Rolex Tournament of Champions. In 2004, the event was held at Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen, Colo. The Capital City Club's Crapbapple Course has hosted two AJGA events, the 2012 Rolex Tournament of Champions and the 2005 Wyndham Cup.

“It is an extreme honor for the Capital City Club as host venue for the 2012 Rolex Tournament of Champions to be chosen by the AJGA as the Invitational (tournament) of the Year,” Covington said. “Being a good host begins with having a wonderful sponsor and of course, there is none finer than Rolex. Everything Rolex does is first class and sponsoring the Rolex Tournament of Champions typifies that rich tradition.”

The tournament returns to the AJGA schedule in 2013 and will be played July 8-12 at Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Pa.
