Proveaux caps season as Rolex Junior Player of the Year

Cody Proveaux of Leesville, S.C., earned the right to Rolex Junior Player of the Year accolades on the strength of wins at the Polo Golf Junior Classic and the Junior PGA Championship, and four additional runner-up showings.

Introduced by the AJGA in 1978, the Rolex Junior Player of the Year award recognizes one boy and one girl who had the most outstanding year in junior golf events at the national level. Past recipients have gone on to become some of the most esteemed players on the PGA and LPGA Tours, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Charles Howell III, Hunter Mahan, Scott Verplank, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel.

When Proveaux travels to PGA National Resort & Spa to accept his Rolex Junior Player of the Year trophy, he will be returning to the tournament where his award-winning season began. At the 2010 Polo Golf Junior Classic, Proveaux won five matches, including a semifinal victory over then-Rolex Junior Player of the Year Anthony Paolucci, en route to his first AJGA Invitational crown.

The following February, he finished runner-up at the HP Boys Championship at Carlton Woods, second only to 2009 Rolex Junior Player of the Year Jordan Spieth.

In his next AJGA event, the FJ Invitational, Proveaux would again earn a runner-up finish. Propelled up the leaderboard by second-, third-, and final-round 67s, Proveaux finished second to future Clemson teammate Billy Kennerly.

Two weeks later, Proveaux found himself in a familiar position at the Rolex Tournament of Champions when he finished in a tie for second. During this stretch of three straight second-place finishes at AJGA Invitationals, he recorded five rounds in the 60s and a 70.18 scoring average.

It was at the Junior PGA Championship that he once again found himself atop the leaderboard, finishing at 6-under-par for the victory. His final runner-up finish of the year came at the Bobby Chapman in September.
Proveaux further proved himself with a 3-1-0 record at the Wyndham Cup as a member of the victorious East Team. He also represented the United States in September at The Duke of York Young Champion’s Trophy where he finished fifth.

A senior at Pelion High School, Proveaux is a two-time Rolex Junior All-American and has given verbal commitment to continue his golf career with the Clemson Tigers.

His accomplishments during the past season will be heralded Nov. 21 during the Rolex Junior All-America Awards Banquet at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The awards ceremony, dubbed “The Greatest Night in Junior Golf,” will also trumpet the achievements of the rest of golf’s next generation by means of the Rolex Junior All-America Teams, HP Scholastic Junior All-America Teams and Jerry Cole Sportsmanship Award.
