Regional Golf Championship Update

Update (May 13, 2011): The Genesis Shootout presented by the Valero Texas Open will be locked-in as a 60-point event (minimum) in the Polo Golf Rankings. In addition to those who meet the criteria already specified, any other AJGA members from the South Central Region will be able to apply for the Genesis Shootout presented by the Valero Texas Open beginning May 20 through June 7, 2011. Acceptance into the tournament for these applicants will be based on Performance Based Entry status.

AJGA Pilots First Regional Golf Championship
Originally posted April 5, 2011

The American Junior Golf Association will conduct a pilot event in San Antonio aimed at providing opportunities to South Central regional junior golfers at the 2011 Genesis Shootout presented by the Valero Texas Open at Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club, July 11-14.

Billed by the AJGA as a “Regional Golf Championship,” this concept provides selected top finishers with automatic entry into an AJGA event. Regional Golf Championships will provide elevated Performance Based Entry (PBE) status and additional exposure to college golf coaches. Annually more than 270 college golf coaches join the AJGA as coaching members, and recruit national junior golfers in competitive fields at top venues on the Association’s 90-event schedule.

The Genesis Shootout presented by the Valero Texas Open will offer opportunities to 132 junior golfers, boys and girls ages 12-18, who are residents of the AJGA South Central Region (which includes Mexico and the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas) and who have met one of the following requirements:

            • Individual state high school golf champion (all divisions in the 2010-2011 academic year)

            • AJGA tournament champion (from June 2010 to May 2011)

            • Top 20 boys/10 girls from the 2010 Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout

            • A top finisher in 2010 state golf association junior championship

            • Current members of the Mexican Junior National Team

The Genesis Shootout presented by the Valero Texas Open has been a staple on the AJGA schedule in San Antonio since 1992 and boasts a list of impressive past champions such as Tiger Woods (1992) and Morgan Pressel (2004).

Tournament entry fee is $270, and participants must be AJGA members, or join the AJGA, in order to participate. For more information or to register for the Genesis Shootout presented by the Valero Texas Open, please contact AJGA Player Services at (770) 868-4200 or ajga@ajga.org.
