Course Spotlight: Red Tail Golf Club

From June 23-26, Red Tail Golf Club in Avon, Ohio, will be hosting the second annual SAP Junior Open. The tournament will feature 120 boy and girl junior golfers, ages 12-18.  It will be a 54-hole stroke play event and will showcase some of the best talent in junior golf.

Last year, the Boys Division finished in a sudden-death playoff, creating an exciting ending to a great tournament. The Boys Division title is up for grabs, as last year’s tournament winner, Wilson Bowen of Winnetka, Ill., will not be returning to defend his title. On the girl’s side, however, Tessa Teachman of Baton Rouge, La., will be back vying for the trophy and looking to hold onto her title for another year.

Red Tail Golf Club officially opened the back nine to its members in 1999 and the entire course was opened for the start of the golf season in 2000. The club has managed to bring southern charm to the north with the architecture and style of the impressive clubhouse. The course, designed by Robert von Hagge, was named after the Red-tailed hawks abundant in the area.

Nestled among 400 acres of land, Red Tail is one of the longest par-72 courses in the area with a men’s yardage of 7,007. The course from the women’s tees is only 5,553 yards, but the lesser distance does not make the course any less intimidating. Red Tail boasts eleven holes with impressive water features, some which stretch from the tee box to the green.

The hardest hole on the course is No. 10. Juniors should look out for this left doglegged hole for various reasons. The left side of the fairway is bordered by water and the right side is out of bounds. In addition to the challenging fairway, the long, skinny green on this difficult hole is guarded by both sand and water, demanding accuracy from the players.

Red Tail Golf Club has proven itself to be a test of talent year after year and the 2008 SAP Junior Open will once again showcase great golf on an excellent course.
