Newsmakers: March 13, 2006

College Round-up

UNLV sophomore Matt Kinsinger led the field at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship last week to take home top honors. The UNLV sophomore finished three strokes ahead of teammate Seung-Su Han and Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin. Kinsinger was playing the event as an individual this week. The Rebels were still able to walk away with team medalist honors.


AJGA Alum Tiffany Joh

Jeremy Alcorn walked away with top honors at the Louisiana Classics event last week. The Baylor University junior finished two strokes ahead of Houston's Ricky Romano. Kevin Newman of Houston and Mike Regenold of Memphis finished two strokes back in a tie for third. Houston captured the team medalist honors.

Auburn University took the Lady Gamecock Classic by storm last week finishing 18 strokes ahead of the field. Auburn senior Maria Martinez led the team finishing 5-under-par, putting her five strokes ahead of Florida State's Caroline Westrup.

The UCLA Bruins topped the field at the Guadalajara Invitational last week in Mexico. Finishing even-par for the tournament, the Bruins topped Southern California by seven strokes. USC senior Irene Cho took home the top individual honors. Jane Park of UCLA finished ten strokes back in second. Lauren Espinosa of Arizona and Tiffany Joh of UCLA finished in a tie for third. Rounding out the top-five were Duke's Amanda Blumenherst and Amie Cochran of UCLA.

NC State senior Stephen Lewton defeated Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson in a playoff at the Seminole Intercollegiate to take home individual medalist honors. With Johnson's help, Coastal Carolina won the team division by seven strokes...Texas Tech took home medalist honors last week at the Hyatt Plantation Club Intercollegiate. Teammates Andrew Dresser and Oscar Floren tied for top honors at 9-under-par...Murray State's Kyle Shirley lost in a playoff to go home with a second place finish while still leading his school to the top team honors...UCLA's Chris Heintz finished 7-under-par at the Braveheart Classic. Heintz's teammate Lucas Lee finished in second pushing UCLA to top the team division...Michael Chappell was the only player to finish under par at the SWAC Presidential. His 3-under-par helped Jackson State to team victory...St. Martin's Shane Prante finished at 8-over-par to win the Washington National Winter Championship. Oregon topped the team division led by Matt Ma...John Stoltz of Johnson and Wales finished 6-under-par to lead his team to medalist honors.

Illinois State's Samantha Richdale took home medalist honors last week at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational...Cincinnati was helped to a top team finish at the Lady Racer Classic by sophomore Hillery Wilson...Northern Arizona took home team honors after the first place individual finish by Sophia Choi at the Bobcat Desert Classic. The sophomore finished three strokes ahead of the field en route to her medalist honors...Middle Tennessee State took home team honors at the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational led by Maggie McGill. Ida Lamela helped Alcorn State take home team honors with her top individual finish at the SWAC Presidential last week...Georgetown's Chelsea Curtis took home individual medalist honors last week at the Fighting Camel Classic. She finished two shots ahead of the field and helped lift Georgetown to top team honors.

ACE

The Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program provides financial assistance to junior golfers who wish to play in AJGA events. Its goal is to give top-flight golf opportunities to young golfers regardless of financial resources. This program helps to fulfill the AJGA’s mission of developing young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.

What is Leadership Links?

Leadership Links is a new program whereby the AJGA is able to further its mission to help develop young men and women by teaching charitable giving skills and service-oriented practices at an early age. This program gives juniors all the tools necessary to donate their time, talent and resources to local charities and the AJGA youth development programs.
