Caparros claims first AJGA title at the Junior All-Star at Stonelick Hills
Porvasnik wins by four strokes in the Girls Division
BATAVIA, Ohio — Kristian Caparros of Miami Lakes, Fla., carded a 1-under-par 143 tournament total to win the Boys Division of the Junior All-Star at Stonelick Hills, while Jessica Porvasnik of Hinckley, Ohio maintained her first-round lead to clinch the Girls Division with an even-par 144.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at Stonelick Hills was a 36-hole stroke play competition played at The Golf Club at Stonelick Hills. The par-72 course played at 6,590 yards for the Boys Division and 5,764 yards for the Girls Division. The 96-player field featured juniors from 22 states, Mexico and Canada.
The Junior All-Star at Stonelick Hills is one of 10 events in the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series. Specifically designed for boys and girls ages 12-15, the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series presents opportunities for younger players to develop their skills and earn entry into AJGA Open tournaments. The Series concludes with the Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational over Columbus Day weekend for winners and top finishers in Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series events.
Caparros started the day two-strokes behind the lead, but quickly responded with a birdie on No. 1 to help solidify his 2-under-par 70 for the round. In his first AJGA win, the 15-year-old relied on his confidence and coaching during Sunday's final round.
“My coach has really helped me,” Caparros said. “My last day is always my good day, so I knew I was going to win or get second place.”
Joshua Whalen of Napanee, Ontario shot even-par 144 to take second place. Jorge Garcia of Miami Lakes, Fla., followed in third with 1-over-par 145, while Zachary Hoskins of Orlando, Fla., earned fourth place honors with 2-over-par 146. Carter Patterson of The Woodlands, Texas rounded out the top five boys with a 4-over-par 148 tournament total.
In the Girls Division, Porvasnik's consistency and focus helped her come out on top to win in her first and last Junior All-Star event. The 15-year-old carded a 1-over-par 73 in the final round to solidify her four-stroke lead over the competition.
“Making par on No. 18 after going in the water felt great,” Porvasnik said. “I hit a lot of good shots and I was consistent. It makes me really happy to win.”
Libby Thomas of Midland, Texas earned second place honors with a 4-over-par 148 tournament total. Courtney Dow of Frisco, Texas came close behind in third with a 5-over-par 149.
GARY GILCHRIST GOLF ACADEMY, a full-time signature golf instruction program located in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., began as an Official Partner of the AJGA in 2009.
