Lavin Lands in Lead After First Round of AJGA Apawamis Junior
Vongphoumy leads by six strokes at The Apawamis Club

RYE, N.Y. — Bennett Lavin of Deerfield, Ill., battled through the Boys Division to emerge as the leader with a score of 2-under-par 70. Juliet Vongphoumy of Providence, R.I., had a strong performance in the Girls Division to take the lead after carding a 3-under-par 69.

The AJGA Apawamis Junior is a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at The Apawamis Club. The tournament field features 72 boys and 27 girls, ages 12-18, from 17 states, China, United Kingdom and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,525 yards while the Girls Division is playing at 5,737 yards.

Lavin put the ball in play right off the tee which was his biggest strength on the tight golf course. He started the day with six straight pars, but a birdie on No. 7 gave his round the boost it needed. Lavin ended the day with three birdies and a one-stroke lead.

“I hit a ton of fairways today which always helps on a course like this with a lot of blind tee shots,” Lavin said. “This is really just a short target golf course so putting the ball in play off the tee is essential.”

Tied for second with scores of 1-under-par 71 are Dylan Murray of Westport, Conn., Brian Starker of Purchase, N.Y., and Benjamin DeForest of Cottekill, N.Y. New York residents Colin McDade of Rye and Derrick Kim of Congers sit in a tie for fifth at even-par 72.

Playing with a hurt wrist, Vongphoumy did not think she was going to play well, especially when her alarm did not go off Tuesday morning. However, the length of the course and the rolling greens played to her strengths, and Vongphoumy marked three birdies and no bogeys on her way to the top of the leaderboard.

“I really like the course,” Vongphoumy said. “It's shorter than other tournaments I have played in but that is okay because I don't hit the ball very long anyway. I also like the greens. They play a lot of breaks and are very undulated, but I am used to it.”

New Jersey residents Cindy Ha of Demarest and Esther Park of Closter are tied for second, each with a 3-over-par 75.
