Shafer Extends Lead at Burgett H. Mooney, Jr. Rome Classic
Ramsey Stays Consistent to Top Girls Division at Coosa Country Club

ROME, Ga.  Cody Shafer of Evans, Ga., used six birdies to extend his lead by three shots and post a two-day total of 6-under-par 136, at the Burgett H. Mooney, Jr. Rome Classic. In the Girls Division, Ashlan Ramsey of Bradenton, Fla., remained consistent with an even-par 71 to sit even-par after two days.

The Burgett H. Mooney, Jr. Rome Classic is a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Coosa Country Club in Rome, Ga. The event features 72 boys and 26 girls, ages 12-18, from nine states and Colombia, New Zealand, Paraguay and the Philippines. The Boys Division is playing the par-71 course at 6,823 yards and the Girls Division at 6,030 yards.

Shafer knew things were headed in the right direction after No. 9.

I have played No. 9 3-under over the past two days, Shafer said. I had an eagle yesterday and I birdied the hole today, so I guess that is my favorite hole on the course.

Sepp Straka of Valdosta, Ga., and Chase Koepka of West Palm Beach, Fla., each card 3-under-par 68 and 2-under-par 69 respectively to stand in second with two-day totals of 3-under-par 139. Carter Page of Waynesville, N.C., shot an even-par 71 and Matt Cote of Palm Harbor, Fla., finished his second round with a 2-under-par 69 to sit tied in fourth with 2-under-par 140.

In the Girls Division, Ramsey made a series of birdies to remain on top after the second round.

I knew I had things going after No. 9 when I hit the flag on my approach shot, Ramsey said. I hit birdie on that so that was nice to finish the turn that way. Then on No. 10 I made a 35-40-foot putt for birdie, so that was a good couple of holes.

Katie Kirk of Davidson, N.C. sits one shot behind Ramsey after carding an even-par second round for a two round total of 1-over-par 143. Kaitlin Matheson of Easley, S.C. shot a 2-over-par 73 to sit two shots back from the lead with a 2-over-par 144.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and 30 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 400 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel.

Thursday's final-round tee times for the Burgett H. Mooney, Jr. Rome Classic will run from 7:30 a.m.  12:50 p.m. off the No. 1 tee at Coosa Country Club. For more information, please call Tournament Director Chris White (770) 601-5196.
