AJGA Hale Irwin Colorado Junior presented by MusclePharm named Newcomer of the Year by AJGA

The AJGA Hale Irwin Colorado Junior presented by MusclePharm has received the 2015 Newcomer of the Year Award from the American Junior Golf Association. The inaugural event was hosted at CommonGround Golf Course in Denver, Colorado, June 1-4.

Each year, the AJGA presents awards to the tournaments with the best individual hospitality, Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament, charitable giving and volunteer base. Awards are also given to the events with the highest media and social media participation. Finally, the AJGA recognizes the year’s most outstanding golf professional, superintendent and general manager, as well as the most improved event, best new event, best Junior All-Star tournament, best Invitational and overall tournament of the year. Tournament awards for the 2015 season will be presented on-site at 2016 tournaments.

“The AJGA is a great organization so to receive an award like this is a tremendous honor,” said Colorado Golf Association Executive Director Ed Mate. “It validates all of the hard work and teamwork that went into planning the event. This award is a recognition of everyone who made it possible, including the planning committee, the Colorado Golf Association staff and volunteer leaders and the CommonGround Golf Course team.”

During the tournament week, World Golf Hall of Famer Hale Irwin hosted a clinic for players and their families. More than 200 people attended to witness the event, where Irwin answered questions and demonstrated shots. The tournament also featured a cookout and putting challenge. Each day of the tournament week, 20-30 volunteers made the tournament experience memorable.

“We pride ourselves in Colorado for great golf,” Mate said. “Great courses, a great climate for golf and most importantly, passionate people who love the game.  You put all of that together and add the Hall of Fame name of Hale Irwin, you have all of the ingredients for success.”

The tournament also raised more than $21,000 for AJGA’s Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant and the Colorado Golf Foundation.

“We are very thankful for our partnership with the Colorado Golf Association and being able to provide an opportunity for Colorado-area juniors to showcase their skills in their own backyard,” said AJGA Senior Regional Director, South Central, Darren Nelson.

The AJGA Hale Irwin Colorado Junior will return to the schedule June 6-9 at Highlands Ranch Golf Club in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
