LIM LEADS BOYS DIVISION AT RIVER RIDGE GOLF CLUB
Wu, Diaz-Yi and Wagner are tied for lead at the Junior All-Star presented by CBIZ MHM
OXNARD, Calif.— Thomas Lim of Moorpark, Calif., took the lead on Tuesday after shooting a 2-under-par 70. Bethany Wu of Diamond Bar, Calif., Lauren Diaz-Yi of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Samantha Wagner of Easton, Pa., tied for the lead in the Girls Division after each shot 1-over-par 73.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star Presented by CBIZ MHM is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at River Ridge Golf Club on the Victoria Lakes Course. The tournament field features 75 boys and 21 girls, ages 12-15, from 11 states, Argentina, Mexico, Canada and Thailand. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,831 yards, while the Girls Division is playing at 5,909 yards.
The Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series is a collection of 11 events specifically designed for boys and girls ages 12-15 and presents opportunities for younger members to develop their skills and earn entry into Open tournaments. The series concludes with the Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational over Columbus Day weekend for winners and top finishers in the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series events.
Lim started his round off with a bogey, but he didn’t loose focus and rebounded with birdies on Nos. 3, 9, 13, 14 and 15. Reflecting back on the round, Lim believed the 425 yard par-4 No. 13 was the highlight. He hit his second shot from 160 yards out to just short of the green. He then went on to make the putt for birdie.
“It was a wow hole for me because I think it’s the hardest hole on the course,” Lim said.
Robert Palacios of Chino Hills, Calif., Thomas Baik of Cordoba, Argentina, and James Wallace of Orange, Calif., all sit in second after each shot 1-under-par 71. Tied for fifth are Jason Chen of Brea, Calif., Jonathan Sanders of Chatsworth, Calif., Walker Huddy of Studio City, Calif., Brandon Roberts of Clayton, Calif., Andrew Levitt of Laguna Niguel, Calif., and Brian Kyunguk Song of Beverly Hills, Calif., each shot even-par 72.
In the Girls Division, Wu, Diaz-Yi and Wagner all find themselves tied for the lead after the first round. Wu had a strong driver today, the rising seventh grader hit 13 of the 14 fairways, which contributed to her birdies on Nos. 5, 6, 14 and 18. Wu came out to the Junior All-Star presented by CBIZ MHM in hopes of making it to the Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational at the end of the summer.
“This was the last Junior All-Star I can go to this summer,” Wu said. “I really want to play in the Monteverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational so I need to make the top-3.”
Diaz-Yi played a steady game. The highlight of her round came on the 487 yard par-5 No. 4. After hitting an extraordinary drive and approach shot, Diaz-Yi made birdie on the hole.
“My driver was fantastic today.” Diaz-Yi said. “My iron-play was pretty good as well.”
Along with the rest of the field, Wagner battled the wind to keep her score low. She found the doglegged holes especially difficult as they emphasized the windy conditions. In order to combat the weather, she played safe and laid-up on most of the par-5’s.
“I chipped into the green a lot,” Wagner said. “My irons weren’t great so I had to rely on my chipping, which was a lot better today.”
