Weaver weathers the afternoon wind for lead in Girls Division

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Cameron Wilson of Rowayton, Conn., fired an opening-round 4-under-par 67 to grab the Boys Division lead at the Nationwide Insurance Junior presented by the Memorial Tournament. Lindsey Weaver of Scottsdale, Ariz., holds the Girls Division lead after a 2-over-par 73 at The Ohio State University Golf Club’s Scarlet Course.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Nationwide Insurance Junior presented by the Memorial Tournament is an 18-hole stroke play event held at The Ohio State University Golf Club – Scarlet Course. The tournament field features 75 boys and 24 girls, ages 15-18, from 24 states, Canada and Taiwan. The Boys Division is playing the par-71 course at 7,017 yards, while the Girls Division is playing the layout at 6,061 yards.

Wilson recorded five birdies on his day against only one bogey. His lone bogey at the 15th dropped him back to 2-under-par for the day. However, Wilson responded with birdies at Nos. 16 and 18 to card 2-under-par 33 on the back nine.

“I didn’t hit it that well, but I didn’t miss it in bad spots,” Wilson said. “It’s firm and fast so it’s not playing that long. But, the greens are so firm, you need to be in the fairway to hold them.”

Chad Merzbacher of Dublin, Ohio, sits alone in second place after a 3-under-par 68. Justin Thomas of Goshen, Ky., and Ross Frankenberg of Barrington, Ill., are tied for third at 2-under-par 69. David Tepe of Liberty Township, Ohio, and Daniel Stringfellow of Roselle, Ill., round out the boys top five with 1-under-par 70s.

Weaver battled windy conditions in the afternoon, but was able to card a 1-under-par 35 on the front nine with no bogeys. Despite bogeying three of the first four holes on the back nine, Weaver holds a two-shot lead going into the second round.

“I had to hit different clubs off the tee,” Weaver said. “It was a two-club wind on some holes. I shot 35 on the front and I knew at that point I was doing pretty well.”

Emma Talley of Princeton, Ky., and Lauren Weaver of Scottsdale, Ariz., are in tie for second place at 3-over-par 75.
