MATHISON TAKES SECOND-ROUND LEAD AT JUNIOR ALL-STAR AT MISSION INN
Wang stays consistent to hold lead in Girls Division

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — Peter Mathison of Jupiter, Fla., moved to the top of the leaderboard of the Junior All-Star at Mission Inn Wednesday after carding a 1-over-par 73. Xin Wang of Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., continues to lead the Girls Division with a two-day total of even-par 144.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at Mission Inn is a 54-hole stroke play event held at Mission Inn Club and Resort — El Campeon Course. The tournament field features 52 boys and 18 girls — ages 12-15 — from 15 states as well as Columbia and Mexico. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 El Campeon Course at 6,655 yards and the Girls Division is playing at 5,696 yards.

Mathison, who started the day in fifth place, worked his way to the top of the Boys Division after a back-and-forth round featuring three birdies and four bogeys.

The 12-year-old Mathison was already 3-over-par for the day after his first five holes, but righted the ship before making the turn when he saved par at No. 18.

“I got up-and-down on the 18th hole, about an 8-foot putt, and then I made a great birdie on the fourth hole and that really just kept the momentum going,” Mathison said. “…Those 2 holes were the biggest achievement of my round.”

Mathison's tournament total stands at 2-over-par 146.

Joey Petronio of Orlando, Fla., and Wheaton Hall of Springfield, Ga., sit in second place, one stroke back of Mathison at 3-over-par 147. Sawyer Shaw of West Palm Beach, Fla., is in fourth place at 5-over-par 149, while Tyler Williams of Hilton Head Island, S.C., holds fifth place at 6-over-par 150.

In the Girls Division, Wang posted her second straight round of even-par golf to hold a X-stroke lead going into Thursday's final round. She stayed mostly consistent Wednesday, dropping 14 pars to go with two birdies and two bogeys.

“Well, I didn't really make that many mistakes,” Wang said. “I felt today was kind of a boring round, making par every hole. I'm just thinking about playing normal out there.”

In second place below Wang on the Girls Division leaderboard is Juliet Vongphoumy of Providence, R.I., with a total of 8-over-par 152. Laura Kanouse of Boca Raton, Fla., is alone in third place at 10-over-par 154.
