LYONS SCORCHES STEELWOOD WITH 6-UNDER-PAR 66 FOR LEAD
Nicole Agnello paces Girls Division with 1-over-par 73

LOXLEY, Ala. — Landon Lyons of Baton Rouge, La., fired a 6-under-par 66 at the AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T to hold a one-shot lead in the Boys Division after Tuesday's first round. Nicole Agnello of Longwood, Fla., opened with a 1-over-par 73 to take the lead in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Steelwood Country Club. The tournament field consists of 60 boys and 17 girls, ages 14 to 18, from nine states and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 layout at 7,004 yards, while the Girls Division is playing the course at 6,052 yards.

Lyons, a Lousiana State verbal commit, blistered Steelwood Country Club, carding eight birdies against only two bogeys. He bogeyed the par-4 first hole before recording birdies at Nos. 2, 4, 5, 7 and 9 for a front-nine 32. He continued his hot play on the back nine with birdies at Nos. 10, 12 and 14 before giving a shot back at No. 15 en route to a back-nine 34.

“I figured if I could keep my drives in play I'd be in good shape,” Lyons said. “From there on out, it was a pretty easy course.”

Conner Pratt of Birmingham, Ala., is in second place after a 5-under-par 67. Chad Bounds of Meridian, Miss., fired the only other sub-par round of the day and sits in third place at 1-under-par 71. In a tie for fourth at even par-72 are Seiji Liu of Beverly Hills, Calif., Zach Hartman of St. Simons Island, Ga., Michael Ulmer of Fairhope, Ala., Theodore Wolfes of St. Simons Island, Ga., Jack Howard of Cartersville, Ga., and Tom Lovelady, Michael Johnson and Stewart Jolly all of Birmingham, Ala.

In the Girls Division, Agnello jumped out to a one-shot lead after a steady round that included 15 pars. Her only birdie came at the par-5 fourth hole on her way to a 1-under-par 35 on the front nine.

“I just kind of took it one shot at a time,” Agnello said. “I tried to put it down the fairway, on the green and tried to make a putt. I had a lot of opportunities; I wish I could have made a few more putts.”

Sandra Lee of Carrollton, Texas, sits in second place after an opening-round 74. A Ram Choi of British Columbia, Canada, is in third place with a 3-over-par 75.
