BRITTON TAKES TOP HONORS WITH 4-UNDER-PAR 68 AT BERKELEY HALL β€” SOUTH COURSE
Cate tops Girls Division with round of 4-over-par 76

BLUFFTON, S.C. β€” Kevin Britton of Palm City, Fla., claimed medalist honors in the Boys Division of the AJGA Qualifier for The Heritage Junior Championship with a round of 4-under-par 68. Lauren Cate of St. Augustine, Fla., was medalist in the Girls Division with a round of 4-over-par 76.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Qualifier for The Heritage Junior Championship was held at Berkeley Hall β€” South Course. The tournament field consisted of 83 boys and 9 girls, ages 12-18, from 10 states, China, Hong Kong and South Korea. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,932 yards, while the Girls Division was played at 6,078 yards.

Britton's round was a personal best and featured six birdies. He said that success early in his round gave him momentum for the rest of the day.

β€œOn my first hole of the day I came up short on my approach and made a real good up-and-down,” Britton said. β€œA couple of holes later I hit a fairway bunker shot from 170 yards out to about 20 feet and was able to make that putt. Those two things really got me going.”

Qualifying for the tournament were John Varol of Weddington, N.C., Ben Firebaugh of Roanoke, Va., Zachery Sobel of Clearwater Beach, Fla., Justin Wylie of Waxhaw, N.C., Taylor Bell of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Davis Lee of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Curtis Slike of Carlisle, Pa., Tyler Williams of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Abdul Sihag of Bradenton, Fla., Michael Montgomery of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Patrick Rudebeck of Lilburn, Ga., and Coley Davis of Bluffton, S.C.

Also qualifying but opting to take a tournament exemption were Cody Shafer of Evans, Ga., Jonathon Lilly of Evans, Ga., Daniel Dippel of Mills River., N.C., Cole Engelhardt of Jacksonville, Fla., Chipper Hughes of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Sean Jacklin of Bradenton, Fla., and John Skeadas of Savannah, Ga.

Cate said the keys to her round were solid iron play and being comfortable on the greens.

β€œI love the greens here,” Cate said. β€œThey're almost identical to the ones at my course back home.”

Also qualifying in the Girls Division were Kathryn Miranda of Lexington, S.C. and Louise Yi of Cinnaminson, N.J.
