BUSBY SHOOTS EVEN-PAR TO QUALIFY FOR AJGA JUNIOR AT STEELWOOD PRESENTED BY AT&T
Marika Liu tops Girls Division to earn medalist honors at Steelwood Country Club

LOXLEY, Ala. â€” Alabama-native Tyler Busby, of Fairhope, played in his first AJGA event and took medalist honors to earn a spot in the AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T after carding an even-par 72 in Sunday's Qualifier. In the Girls Division, Marika Liu, of Bradenton, Fla., posted a 2-over-par 74 to take home medalist honors.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the 18-hole stroke-play Qualifier featured 37 boys and 12 girls â€” ages 12-18 â€” each trying to "play their way in" to the AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T or build their status within the AJGA's Performance Based Entry system. Sunday's Qualifier gave nine boys and two girls the opportunity to play in the AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T, which begins Monday, June 2.

Busby felt good about being able to play so close to home for his first AJGA event. Despite a bogey on the first hole, three birdies on the front nine provided him with the momentum necessary to finish strong.

“I wasn't nervous at all really,” Busby said. “It was a well-run event, pace of play was good, and I was just ready to play.”

In addition to Busby, the following players earned spots in the AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T: Bradley Kushner of Mendham, N.J., Chase Koepka of Wellington, Fla., Han Kim of Lake Mary, Fla., Yinchi Liu of Bradenton, Fla., Frank McGough of Pike Road, Ala., Kyle Huett of Bulverde, Texas, Vincent Hung of Bradenton, and William Catanzaro of Gadsen, Ala. Other players who qualified but opted to take an AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing this week were: Trey Neck of Baton Rouge, La., Taylor Stevenson of Port Orange, Fla., Jarrett Smith of McKinney, Texas, Sam Love of Trussville, Ala., and Seiji Liu of Bradenton.

In the Girls Division, Marika Liu overcame two bogeys on the front nine and said her solid play contributed to her medalist honors.

“I had good irons and good putting,” she said. “I only had one birdie, but everything was consistent.”

Meagan Roberts of Ocean Springs, Miss., shot a 4-over-par 75 to earn the second spot in the tournament field.
