HOFFMANN TAKES EARLY LEAD AT REDSTONE GOLF CLUB
Four players within two shots heading into second round
HUMBLE, Texas — Morgan Hoffmann, 17, of Saddlebrook, N.J., took the reins early as he leads the field of the inaugural Houston Boys Invitational at Redstone presented by HP and Administaff. Behind Hoffmann, a four-way tie rounds out the top five.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Houston Boys Invitational at Redstone presented by HP and Administaff is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Redstone Golf Club's Tournament Course, home of the PGA TOUR's Shell Houston Open. The 78-player field features 15 players from Texas and 20 Rolex Junior All-Americans. In all, 19 states and eight foreign countries are represented. The par-72 layout is being played at 7,376 yards.
Battling harsh weather conditions, Hoffmann came out with a vengeance. Carding four birdies, Hoffmann's steady play and even tempo was enough to keep him atop the leaderboard with a 3-under-par 69.
“I was solid from the get go, and had a good tempo,” Hoffmann said. “It's different to have an invitational as the first tournament of the season, but it feels good to be at the top.”
Cody Gribble of Dallas, winner of the 2007 Western Junior Championship, is no stranger to the elite competition. Gribble, tied for second with three others at 1-under-par 71, said the weather made the course conditions more difficult than usual.
“I had to play it safe today, make the pars where I could,” Gribble said. “I'm happy with my 71 finish.”
Rounding out the top five and all tied with Gribble for fifth, are Cory Whitsett of Houston, Ronnald Monaco of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Sean Einhaus of Borken, Germany.
