MAYO CARDS 4-UNDER-PAR 68, TAKES ONE-STROKE LEAD
Espericueta tops Girls Division at 1-over-par 73

SAN ANTONIO β€”Robert Mayo of Austin, Texas, posted a 4-under-par 68 to take the first-round lead at the Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout Tuesday in the Boys Division. In the Girls Division, Felicia Espericueta of Edinburg, Texas, carded a 1-over-par 73 at San Antonio Country Club to lead the field by three strokes going into Wednesday's second round.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at the San Antonio Country Club. The 120-player field features players from 13 states, Washington D.C., and Mexico. The course is being played at 6,690 yards for the Boys Division and 6,070 yards for the Girls Division.

After making two bogeys on Nos. 1 and 4, Mayo was able to bounce back a total of six birdies during the round.

β€œOnce you get into a rhythm, you can picture a shot and it'll come off the way you see it.” Mayo said.

Broc Raymond of The Woodlands, Texas, finished the day one stroke behind Mayo with a 3-under-par 69. Tied for third, Seth Stuart of Austin, Texas, and Juan Pablo Hernandez of Mexico City carded 2-under-par 70s. Chris Ortiz of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Christopher Walker of The Woodlands, Texas, also finished the day in the top five with 1-under-par 71s.

In the Girls Division, Espericueta played a consistent round to take the girls lead, but reflected on a few birdie opportunities missed.

β€œI lipped out a lot,” Espericueta said. β€œI just don't get mad and move on to the next hole to try and make another birdie. I want to go out and do the same thing tomorrow, and try and shoot a little lower.”

Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash., Mary Michael Maggio of Conway, Ark., and Sehee Kim of Maricopa, Ariz., are all tied for second at 4-over-par 76 .
