Chen wins medalist honors in Girls Division

HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich., — Blake English of Charlotte, Mich., and Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ontario, carded 2-under-par 70s to co-medal at the Srixon Qualifier for the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands Tuesday. Justine Chen of Lake Forest Calif., posted a 2-over-par 74 to medal in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands Srixon Qualifier was an 18-hole stroke play event held at Boyne Highlands Resort — Moor Course. The 100-player field featured players from 17 states, Indonesia, Mexico and Canada. The course played at 6,762 yards for the Boys Division and 5,975 yards for the Girls Division.

Hughes said his birdie on No. 1, his 14th hole of the day, which put him at 3-under-par for the day, helped him feel confident on the greens.

“Putting was the best part of my game,” Hughes said. “It was a nice change.”

After hitting 15 greens, English said his long irons were the best part of his game. Birdies on Nos. 5 and 8 helped keep him motivated especially to play in the tournament.

“I just want to play my game in the tournament,” English said. “I just want to keep playing like I did today.”

In addition, Yao-Chun Yang of Bradenton, Fla., carded an even-par 72, Matthew Alessi of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., posted a 1-over-par 73, Paul Hammerschmidt of Westerville, Ohio, Richard Hearden III of Green Bay, Wis., tied carding 3-over-par 75s, Jared Dalga of Grand Rapids, Mich., Chris Holsinger of Tequesta, Fla., Matt Milholland of Marysville, Ohio, Wesley Gates of Novi, Mich., Gregory Smith of Commerce Township, Mich., Sheldon Keyte of Portage, Mich., Scott Landreth of Stratford, Ontario, all tied posting 4-over-par 76s, Jordan Havens of Glencoe, Ill., and Austin Dean of Billings, Mont., will round out the Boys Division in the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands both carding 5-over-par 77s.

In the Girls Division, Chen said her strategy was to play one ball at a time and not get ahead of herself. With 4-over-par 40 on the front nine, Chen birdied Nos. 11, 13 and 15 to finish the back nine with a 2-under-par 34.

“I started off pretty rough, but got it back after the front nine when the sun started coming out,” Chen said.
