GEIS FIRES 1-UNDER-PAR 70 TO LEAD BOYS DIVISION
Villareal sits atop Girls Division leaderboard after 2-over-par 73

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. — Dan Geis of El Segundo, Calif., shot a 1-under-par 70 to take the first-round lead in the Boys Division of the Medicus Postseason Junior at Lake Havasu. Maria Angelica Villareal of Vista, Calif., took the Girls Division lead after she fired a 2-over-par 73.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Medicus Postseason Junior at Lake Havasu is being played at The Refuge Golf Club. Part of the Medicus Preseason/Postseason Junior Series, the tournament is a 36-hole stroke play event consisting of 64 boys and 11 girls from 15 states and two countries.

Seventeen-year-old Geis attributed his low round to keeping his ball out of trouble. Geis's simple swing thoughts gave him confidence to shoot at flagsticks and play aggressively.

“I had a lot of confidence out there,” Geis said. “I felt like I could put up a good score.”

Playing in the final pairing with a one-stroke lead won't phase Geis. He said final-round jitters won't hinder his ability, as long as his game-plan stays simple.

“I just have to go out there and play my game,” Geis said. “I'm sure there will be pressure, but I have to take it one shot at a time.”

Scott Lewis of Henderson, Nev., and Richard Durham of Holladay, Utah, are in a two-way tie for second after shooting even-par 71s. Payne Wilkie of Austin, Texas, Colin Van Es of Granger, Ind., Kyle Holden of Simi Valley, Calif., Sean Bulger of Spokane, Wash., A.J. Hasegawa of Folsom, Calif., and Seungrok Cheon of Kyeonggido, South Korea are in a six-way tie for fourth after they all shot 1-over-par 72.

In the Girls Division, Villareal utilized a hot putter and consistent tee shots to give her a two-stroke lead heading into the final round.

“It was a good round, and I putted really well,” Villareal said, “but I left a lot of shots on the course.”

By hitting 12 greens, Villareal was able to give herself opportunities. The 17-year-old sees herself in the winner's circle if she can capitalize on her chances in the final round.

“I really don't feel any pressure,” Villareal said, “but I can't force the birdies, I just have to let them come.”

Stephanie Arcala of Oceanside, Calif., and Jessica Uem of Mount Laurel, N.J., are tied for second after they shot 4-over-par 75.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The largest Association of its kind, the AJGA has a junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 50 states and 30 foreign countries.

The Medicus Preseason/Postseason Series is designed for new AJGA members or members who have yet to play in an AJGA event. The series provides an opportunity for members to gain status in Performance Based Entry, which in turn will increase their ability to play in future AJGA events.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. More than 200 former AJGA juniors currently play on the PGA and LPGA Tours and have compiled more than 280 wins. AJGA alumni include Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, Mike Weir, Charles Howell III, Jim Furyk, Grace Park, Cristie Kerr, Candie Kung and Paula Creamer.
