O'NEILL JUMPS TO TOP OF BOYS DIVISION LEADERBOARD AT DORNOCH GOLF CLUB
Johnson maintains lead in Girls Division in second-round action

DELAWARE, Ohio — Peter O'Neill of Carmel, Ind., made use of moving day Wednesday, as he carded a second round 3-under-par 68, giving him a tournament total of 137. O'Neill bests the Boys Division by a single stroke going into the final round. Jennifer Johnson of Carlsbad, Calif., registered a 1-over-par 72 performance and a tournament total of 141 to take a two stroke lead in the Girls Division.

The Nationwide Insurance Junior presented by the Memorial Tournament is a 54-hole tournament presented by the American Junior Golf Association at Dornoch Golf Club in Delaware, Ohio. The 95-player field boasts 71 boys and 24 girls from 12 states, Canada, Mexico and India.

O'Neill opened the day by recording par on the first three holes and then posted a birdie on the challenging par-5, 543-yard No. 4. O'Neill closed out the front nine with a 1-under-par 34. On the backside, O'Neill recorded two more birdies en route to his 3-under-par 68.

“I did not make any mistakes today,” O'Neill said. “My ball striking was great and I hit 16 greens, including all of the back nine.”

After playing a round that included three birdies and no bogies, O'Neill will be teeing off as the leader for the first time in his AJGA career.

“I need to go out and play my game tomorrow,” the senior-to-be said. “Still having one more round to play, I need to not get focused on anyone else. I need to put up another good round.”

Also in contention for the lead is Bo Hoag of Columbus, Ohio. Hoag has accumulated a two-day total of 138 and currently sits in second place. In a three-way tie for third and a single stroke behind Hoag are Ohio-natives Ethan Tracy of Hilliard and Matthew Stauch of Dublin, and Adam Sumrall of South Bend, Ind. The trio has a tournament total of 139.

Johnson, who celebrated her 15th birthday during the second round, began the front nine by posting par on all but one hole to put her at 1-over-par 36. Upon making the turn, she posted par on seven of nine holes. Johnson tallied her lone birdie of the day on the par-5, 495-yard No. 13. Her tournament total sits at 141 going into the final round.

“I hit a lot of greens today,” Johnson said. “That really saved me out there. For me tomorrow, putting will be key. If I can make my shots, I think I have a good chance.”

Currently in second place, two shots behind Johnson, is the defending tournament champion, Allie White of Lancaster, Ohio, with a two-day total of 143. Rebecca Lederhausen of Hinsdale, Ill., Lousia Shu of West Bloomfield, Mich., and Sarah Thead of Poway, Calif., each hold tournament totals of 144 and are tied for third.
