CHANG MEDALS IN BOYS DIVISION AT STONEBRIDGE
Birdies and an eagle help Hourihan top Girls Division

ROME, Ga. — Derek Chang of Alparetta, Ga., came out firing in the Srixon Qualifier for the Burgett H. Mooney, Jr. Rome Classic carding a 5-under-par 67. Brighid Hourihan of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., led the Girls Division by three strokes to take home medalist honors.

The Srixon Qualifier for the Burgett H. Mooney, Jr. Rome Classic was an 18-hole event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Stonebridge Golf Club  and featured 100 players representing 14 states and Mexico. Ten boys and five girls qualified for the three-day tournament at the Coosa Country Club.

Chang carded five birdies to medal in the Boys Division. The par-72 course played easy for Chang who said he expected to play well, but not that well.

“I thought the course played pretty easy,” Chang said. “I didn't make many mistakes today, and when I did, I got lucky.”

Hourihan finished the day with three birdies and one eagle to claim medalist honors in the Girls Division. Hourihan said all in all, the course played well for her and coming in, she only expected to make the cut.

“I played really well and nothing went wrong,” Hourihan said. “My first hole was kind of intimidating, but things went well after that.”

Hourihan decided to have a tournament exemption added to her Performance Based Entry status in lieu of playing in this week's tournament.

Also qualifying for the Burgett H. Mooney, Jr. Rome Classic were Bobby Bode of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Michael Hebert of Palm Bay, Fla., Matt Yost of Matthews, N.C., Hayes Brown of Atlanta, Danny Griggs of Winter Park, Fla., John Stembridge of Norcross, Ga., Gary Quinn of Anthem, Ariz., Matt Doty of London, Ky., and Brent Whitehead of Marietta, Ga.
