QUALIFIER RYDER WINS FIRST AJGA TITLE AT FIDELITY INVESTMENTS JUNIOR AT TRUMP NATIONAL
Yang takes Girls Division title by 14 strokes at Trump National Golf Club

BEDMINSTER, N.J.-Samuel Ryder of Rosemont, Pa., recaptured his first-round lead to win his first American Junior Golf Association title with a 69-80-72—221 at the Fidelity Investments Junior at Trump National on Friday. In the Girls Division, Glory Yang, of Murrieta, Calif., went wire-to-wire with a tournament total 225 to claim her second AJGA title.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fidelity Investments Junior at Trump National was a 54-hole stroke-play competition that featured 84 boys and girls from 19 states. This was the first time Trump National Golf Club has hosted an AJGA event. The par-72 course played at 6,858 for the Boys Division (Girls Division played at 5,858 yards).

Ryder, who has struggled with his putting in the past, attributed his tournament success to his putter.

“I hit fewer fairways today than I did all week, but I putted well,” the 16-year-old said. “I only had 28 putts.”

Ryder, who finished the final round with a two-stroke lead, carded five birdies on the day to win the Boys Division.

“Winning an AJGA event is unbelievable. This course is almost perfect. I knew I was playing well, but I didn't expect this,” Ryder said. “It was all the back nine. When I birdied Nos. 12, 13 and 14, I thought I could win.”

Chris Rockwell of Owings Mills, Md., and Spencer Cole of Greer, S.C., tied for second with tournament totals of 223. Thomas McCarthy of Tolland, Conn., came in fourth at 226, and Sean Brannan of Hollidaysburg, Pa., came in fifth at 227.

In the Girls Division, Yang, who won the Girls Division by 14 strokes, broke away from the rest of the field during the second round.

“The flagsticks were harder Thursday, but my shots worked out very well and it was easier to make my birdies,” Yang said.

Yang placed first at the I.R.I. Golf Group Oakridge Junior in 2004 and attributed her final round success to her approach shots and short second putts.

“My putting didn't work as well today as it has been the last two days, but I was able to approach the hole easily,” Yang said. “I didn't have to make hard putts.”

Sarah Brown of Stewartsville, N.J., came in second with a tournament total 239 and Danielle Frasier of Encinitas, Calif., came in third at 242.
